Where abouts do you guys find it best to buy tools from. Including MIG welder and compressor. Plus angle grinder etc what power welder and compressor would be needed for auto repairs cheers |

I just picked up a budget (read: really cheap) angle grinder from my local toolbarn type place. Its a 500w Dynalink kit, came with a 2yr warranty, with a twisted knot wire brush, which so far is basically all I've used to strip my car down:D It gets really hot in about 15-20mins of use, so I might get another soon so I can keep swapping between them to get more done. Also would like info on a Mig welder, might be a worthwhile investment. |

I've got a `collection' of cheap angle grinders.  4 still work...
Some are good, some not-so-good. You get what you pay for. Good deal at the moment is a GMC 4" kit at Big W- I paid $39 and it comes with 2 year warranty and 50 grinding & cutoff discs. Oh and it's 650W. I use one hard at work, and it doesn't get hot like the $17 `cheapies' do. 
More W(atts) it's got, the better.

the one i was looking at was ffrom kmart had a rubber backing plate and buffer 109 dollars but was a decent brand and power im a little nervous using cheap ones saftey wise |

They do all meet the Australian safety standards. They can't sell them here, otherwise. Early Chinese ones were a copy of a Bosch. re MIG welders, watch what you buy. There are a lot of toys out there. I would buy one with 100A or more, set up to use gas and solid wire. It's better on rust... and yeah, I'm a welder..
The move Voltage steps it has, the better. Name brands are best, you will get parts if/when you need them. I like the `WIA' 150A or 175A ones,or Lincoln 170A, if you got the $$$.. re compressors, you get what you pay for. Little direct drive ones are toys. Belt drive ones are best, they are quiet and last longer. I'd buy a 2.5HP one, (or bigger) if you can afford it, and intend to do painting..

The Lincoln one has a 3 year warranty and they keep parts forever.. unlike some brands. Yeah they are dear, but you won't ever need to buy another.

so im looking at around a grand hey mnmnm maybe im better off just getting the pros to do it although its something i want to learn and quess i have it forever probably better getting a good one doing it once right |

I bought my air compressor from GASWELD, and my welder is also from there, but it was a present given to me when I left a job a few years back. They are well priced and have everything. |

You don't need to buy welders new, either. I got my MIG S/H, it was a trade-in. It's a `Kemppi' Super Kempomat, 125A, has stepless V control, ampmeter, 12V/24V fast battery charger too. I can run it down to 30A with 0.8 wire...
Cost me $450, some years ago. I had a Valiant that needed welding annually (as they do!)

you're not wrong there....
Try the trading post for second hand welders. I even saw one at a local Sunday Market that was pretty good. I would not hesitate in buying a second hand one. Save you lotsa $$$. |

If you buy a small MIG, watch what gun they use- many have a non-standard mounting with a pissy little gun, and you can't (easily) fit something else. The best ones all have a `Eurofit connector' these days which will take a variety of standard guns.

Hand tools i buy from Repco.......cause they aint to bad an i get discount there too
