Post subject:  Engine Stands

Does anyone know if the engine stand on sale at Supercrap at the moment is any good for Mini engins?

Its selling 40% off at $89

I've got one that I've used for three engines. Pretty fiddly to get the right setting first up (Nothing to do with the stand though, just getting used to the setting up), but once you've worked it out you can mount it from the front of the engine block or at the clutch end quite easily.

I don't know how useful I actually find it really, I always feel bad leaning on a torque wrench when they are mounted, and you are always finding the engine stand in the way when trying to bolt things on. A firm, strong bench I think is my preference.

Slight hijack;

I really would like to know if someone has an engine stand, with the mounting plate cut to shape to suit alternator bracket holes, and or oil filter head holes?

end hijak;

Yep, supercheap ones are fine. All the cheap ones are pretty much the same. If I had it over, I'd buy one with two legs going under the engine (u shape not t shape if you know what i mean) for ease of manouvering.

Apart from that, they are excellent.

Kazjim modded his engine stand. Pretty sure is a supercheap style one.

Drilled two extra holes in the mounting plate and lined em up with respective holes on the block.

Yeah I did the same as well for the alternator mounting holes.

Yup...

One in the Left oil filter boss hole, the other in the Top alternator hole...

Spot, Punch and drill .. make us some spacers so that the different level bosses line up with the plate nice and neat....

The engine is really nicely balanced on mine, was able to rotate engine and gearbox quite easily during the build.... after the clutch housing went on though, i wasnt able to turn the whole way, but it didnt matter by then !

Good luck Dave

Yeh - I've go the template somewhere for doing that mod. Just figured that for $89 I couldn't make one for that but was curious as to how others found the quality.

It's not that important to have a template, in this case you're only mounting two bolts and only need to know the distance apart between the two bolts. So if you drill two holes at the right distance apart and it is bound to fit. You square it up for aesthetics only.

thats the whole point of that supercrap stuff - its not good quality at all but its probably just as good as what you can make at home and for the price it'd cost you more to make it at home anyway.

I think someone has stuffed up at Supercrap. The picture in the add is of the 450kg capacity stand but the words say 560kg - In store the 560Kg is the one with the 'U' shaped legs and is $89 while the 450kg (as in the picture) is $109 - go figure and if in the market for a stand you won't get this opportunity again :wink:
