Just be careful on the next rainy night when the headlights are on as is the radio and the wipers plus the heater as it all may stop. (lucus the prince of darkness)

Get your generator/alternater checked to see if its pumping out the amps it should and recharging your battery. If a generator get new brushes, can't help with the altenator I've never repaired one. A good auto electrician should reco for $70 maybe and no more diming.

would there be any problem, if i just keep driving it as is, until it breaks, apart from the fact the car wont start, when it does finally give up

No, except you might kill the battery in the process :!:

Would a relay help?

Post subject:

A relay (and some decent wiring) will make the headlights brighter, but not fix the problem of an undercharging alternator.

Those clubby alternators don't put a lot of juice out. I wired an Ammeter in properly to the Clubman Sunshine and find that with the lights, heater and indicators flashing, the ammeter will dip into the negative while the engine is running. Gets better above idle.

My 76 Clubman does the same thing. The indicators also slow down if the car is idling, but speed up when you rev it.

this can happen if u have a bad earth at the battery. trust me i know. or if u have a battery cut out and it is cut on the earth side after starting the car

my VY tonner was doing that excat thing, for about 3 weeks, then, my battery had to be replaced :( :( Then one day after My Cooper S Battery had to be replaced. SO I ended up buying delote? one ( O.E BMW) for about $15 more than a centry with more CCA rating and a cool Green ball that shows when the battery is charged, so if the car won't start you look, if it's green you the batt is fine, start looking else where of it's black get your jumpper leads out

That's perfectly normal it means that it's a little tired, but nothing to worry about

I would advize getting a reputable battery place to check it out for output and check the battery. if you don't know a good battery place you can take it to a auto electrician and for a small fee they should be able to tell you if it's going to hold in there for a little while.

It could be a bad earth or your original relay but all mini electrics are dodgey so I wouldn't get too fussed
