Post subject: | Rover Mini MEMS 2J ECUs |
No one out there seems to have "cracked" diagnostic computer gadgets used for Rover Coopers (happy to be corrected) in Australia, finding a dealer/shop/anyone with the correct equipment and knowledge. I believe there are standard base units and a series of plug-in cards to customise it for a particular model. Pre-96 I believe the A-series motor is on carbs in the Mini. Post-96, it uses the same MEMS 2J ECU as most other Rover Group products, including the K-series I4 as used in the MGF, Elise, Caterham etc and the KV6. So...that means Rover Mini owners we may be able to go along to a friendly MG dealer (hang on, there aren't any left!!) However, maybe someone still is set up to look after MGF and will allow us to connect a Rover Mini to their machine....then again....I wonder if all the fault codes etc will be the same?? The MGF MEMS has ISO 9141 K-cable bus (connector 19MO843) and communicates (with TestBook or specialized instrument) via Keyword 2000 protocol and uses P-code diagnosis strategy. There is also a mention of change from port C0635 to C0914 halfway through 2001. So there are maybe possibilities for helping Rover Mini people in Oz. A great site I have been pointed to is here: http://www.ilexa.co.uk/forum/index.php/board,30.0.html |

So you are saying.....Steve is right on top of the problem ![]() I think I'd prefer to hear that from Steve himself. I don't want to single any one business out...this was supposed to be a general discussion...but seeing as how this one is advertising....maybe Steve could also answer some questions ![]() ![]() Does he have all the Fault Codes and what to do to correct problems. Does he have all the Rover Tech Bulletins covering mods/problems with the ECUs. Does he have spare ECUs, circuit cards, components and a repair service capable of fixing them. Does the ECU have to be in the particular car to fix faults (obviously, as shown on his website - yes - is the ideal). Can he offer an exchange service? |

The car in the photo belongs Ian, to a mate of mine. It's running a 98 MPi engine. He also has a Morris Minor Traveller running a 95 SPi engine convered to RWD. I remember him saying Steve did a diagnostic on the car once. Don't know the details though. |

Rover minis in Japan had SPi much earlier than '96. I imported a 94 auto with Spi. There are 3 versions I know of. SPI with standard coil and a distributor based upon the earlier eletronic housing (same as my MG Metro) but shortened with no advance mechanism or reluctor, so just a housing and a rotor/cap. SPI as sold to Japan after 98 with the coil pack ignition and the MPI block with oil filter straight in, no external oil pipe and no distributor at all. MPI as sold in UK and, rurmour has it, in Japan on cars without A/C I have the Haynes manual that covers UK Rover minis and it says there are two distinct versions of the MEMS computers, 1 for SPI and 1 for MPI. It also says that the unit can be re-programmed via the diagnostics port using the Rover service equipment. I assume this means that certain map shifting parameters can be changed to compensate for ageing components like O2 sensor or increasing knock in an older engine. I doubt it means that the whole map can be changed. BUT it could be that the MEMS is very similar to the Ford computers where the whole map can be re-flashed through the diagnostic port. I'm certain this would take a different device to do than a simple fault code diagnostic box. I am very suprised that no ex-rover UK employees have sold the software on the web. Maybe it's worth a search or a visit to the UK rover/MG forums M |

SPi starts in 1992 over here with 53HP and as Cooper with 63HP, the ECU has 2 connectors, later 1 connector. by 10/1996 the MPi hit the road never heard that the SPi ECU can be reprogrammed, but the MPi can but not through the diagnostic port as far as i know both will compensate for ageing, i had a dieing MAP sensor (SPi) and could tell the ECU to compensate for that with my MicroCheck (diagnostic tool before the TestBook came out) to my knowledge the TestBook software use a special operating software environment and a special connector (different pins) to talk to the adapter cables |

Does he have all the Fault Codes and what to do to correct problems. yes i do Does he have all the Rover Tech Bulletins covering mods/problems with the ECUs. i have a lot of the bulletins on cd... just a matter of sorting through them Does he have spare ECUs, circuit cards, components and a repair service capable of fixing them. i have spare computers for every model, sensors, wiring harness etc Does the ECU have to be in the particular car to fix faults (obviously, as shown on his website - yes - is the ideal). send me your computer and i'll read the faults... Pay me and my airfares and i'll come to you and work on your car also have piggyback computers for big cam/ big compression rovers. I can also do MGF and Land Rover's, BMW etc... the factory Rover software is useless once they upgrade testbooks. what else do you want to know??? |
