My personal view is that they are something to bash your head on in an accident.

Before anyone says "that is why you pad your roll cage" I have been knocked out by a padded cage while wearing a helmet.

I would say give that one a miss it's alloy and out of a LHD mini, coz the saftey harness is on the wrong side for us in OZ. you will find CAMS and RTA have different rules for rollcages. if you want to get yours on a track and the road you can't just have any old one.

the main reason I say no is that this person has probably put it in and then hit his head on the bar behind the driver's head a few times, and taken it out. only buy it if you know someone willing to weld alloy. otherwise you will be better off buying one that's not dodge

Nah, he has just got the rear arms aimed the wrong way so he could take the photo. The rear arms are just resting in the slip joints and should be turned around.

Got a bit of an OT question.. I think it was asked before. But can you make your own custom rollcages, as long as they're engineered is it all good?

I had a half cage engineered in my mini a couple of years ago. Half cages are can be engineered as long as.
Your head does not come within a certain distance of any of the bar.
YOu remove the back seat (car is registered as a two seater)

AS for CAMS
CAMS does not recognise a half cage for closed circuit racing. (Did I hear someone say it was alloy?) SOme regularity, touring and historic events allow half cages.

Full cages must bee steel and at least 6 point.

As far as I knwo you CANT get a 6 point cage engineered for the road IN A MINI (yes others cars can do it) the reason for this is no matter how small you are there is just not enough room in a mini for the required head clearance.

My Opinion - Half cages are good for the road - give some protection and look pretty cool.

Pain in the ass to install. Bond Roll Bars charge $850 for a full cage, but if you want them to insatll it - it's another $700.

The way they get around it here is if you have a full cage that's ok as long as you also have harnesses - this keeps you off the cage in a crash. Has to be approved by the motor sport bods and this over-rides the LVV requirements (NZ equivalent of Aussie enginnering cert thingy). Half cage is fine as long as you have high-backed seats and can't hit any of the cage (and no back seat) as described above.

yep, ya have to have an authority card here, this is a pic of the 8point in my starlet, its legal here, but they do get a little edgy over it.

Your car does not need to be road registered to compete in Targa Tassi just road worthy.

My car has a full roll cage and is registered. Street legal and Road Registered - two diffirent things.

If anyone has been able to get a full roll cage engineered in NSW in the last 10 years please speak up as I dont beleive it can be done.

In WA (& under the incoming NCOP) you can only get a 4 point cage approved for the road. A 6 point is also acceptable, but only if the door bars are bolt-in & not fitted for road use.

If you look back through the forum over the past year (or year and a bit) there have been 3 minis rolled and none of them had cages and none of the occupants have been hurt. There has to be something in it.

I would not like to be in a car with a full cage and not have a helmet on. I was hit in the side at Eastern Creek once and my helmet hit the (padded) bar hard enough to ring the bells.

It's not the 6 point cage that is the main problem. Getting one approved in NSW in lets say a commodore would not be hard. But the problem is the limited head clearance in a mini. Even with my seat bolted straight to the floor there is not enough room between your head and the side and front bars.

minis have a very ridged shell, they used to send a welder under the works cars during service to weld the cracks in the shell as the metal cracks insted of the shell bending. in the toyota, as you go over a speed bump or curb, the shell flexes(not seem welded) and the cage stays very stiff.
wouldnt recomend in a road car, drives one insane very very qicckly, also the harnesses and seats mean you cant turn your head(or see) to check your blindspot.
