Ive been thinking a bit too much lately....

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4647141877&fromMakeTrack=true

Sure it needs a bit of work, but I wonder if it will actually sell. The owner seems to know what he is talking about, so I guess he might have set a generous reserve price....

Anybody want to guess the reserve price?
Anybody want to guess what someone would be willing to pay for it?

I'd expect the final bid to be up to 3 grand (if the car is legitimate). Hell, maybe even more. But I have a feeling it wont actually sell.

I'd guess a little less, may be $2000 - $2500?
It's not an S, and needs a hell of a lot of work

Yeah it's rarer in Oz, whether Cooper 997 or 998.
They were the dog's bollocks, before the S was released.

They are a much pretty car interior and exterior, S - black yawn.

997 - 998 Cooper is the one to have in the style stakes.

MkI English Austin Cooper is the car I really want.

I have a lot of people chasing original cooper's and there very hard to get . By my records there was only 2800 997 coopers built from jul 62 - jan 64 & 1100 of the 998 coopers built from feb 64 - dec 64. if all new model body numbers start at 501 wouldn't that mean 998 cooper body numbers would have stopped at 1601?? if so this one listed has a body number of 4190!!! Also 998 cooper engine numbers started with prefix 9FASAH not sure about 9YSAH . Please let me know if im wrong.

Yeah they are prettier, I regret selling my 63 Cooper, but I'm pretty sure you would get the return on investment as you might with an S. But that is not what I would have in mind if I bought this one.

They are a much nicer car than the Australian S IMHO. So much more charismatic because of the sliding windows etc. Just like an 850's charm.

And not to mention the more imagination in the trim using different colours in the seat inserts rather than solid colour seats . Plus most Cooper's are now dressed up as Cooper S's and they are getting rarer .

That is why I love my Austin Super Deluxe so much 850 with Cooper brightwork pity its not a Super (two tone paint, cooper brightwork plus cooper trim) but all the same they are rare in the UK as you put a remote in change the grill and badges and MKI cooper.

The MKI cooper interior gold or Stilver brocade is beautiful

I own the last 998 Cooper sold in Brisbane by Plaisted Motors at Nundah and the details from the original owners handbook lists the following information.

Car number/chassis number: YKA2S1/3553
Engine number: 9FA/SA/L/1662
Registration number: NXC269

The car was manufactured in December 1964 and sold in August of 1965. The car was completely original up until a few weeks ago when the Cooper brakes (really stuffed) were removed and Cooper 'S' brakes fitted throughout. Prior to my purchasing the car, it has only had the one owner. Great car.

Surely YKA2S1 refers to 997 AND 998 coopers, and therefore the body number would be 501 + 2800 + 1100, so YKA2S1 4190 would be okay?

I'm guessing the boot lid has been changed, wouldn't it have had a UK boot lid originally?

yeah we forget that so many of the cars in the sixties were sent her as "completely knocked down" and were basically assembled here.

We had a neighbour who worked in the Ford Homebush factory (Sydney) who sold most of the neighbourhood very large wooden boxes (half modern container size) that we could use for garden sheds, chook sheds or avaries. These contained early cortinas and anglias as complete cars but in bits.

It was easy for Austarlia to substitute boot lids etc as part of the Australian contribution to avoid foreign car tarifs
