Hi,

OK, so I replaced the terminals on the battery cables because they were loose and couldnt be tightened anymore.
This allowed my beast to start, run and be happy.

However I just drove to work this morning and (its actually the second time) as I am driving, the guages all drop (except speed) and the alternator light comes on :( and I have no electrics (blinkers, lights, wipers, etc)
So a bit later few kms down the road... the guages pop up and things are normal again... for about 2min and then back to nothing.

If I put my blinker on or fan or anything during that time the ALT (alternator) light comes on really bright.

First thing I would be looking at is the fuses.

Also check the crimp on connector that joins the ignition lead to the center of the starter solenoid , clean the terminal and make sure the connector goes on tight .

Bottom line Peter
You have a loose connection somewhere in the circuitry. The risk with it cutting in and out is that each time it breaks or makes contact, it sparks and you run a risk of burining some or all of the wiring harness.

A new harness is fairly expensive and second hand harnesses almost always show the effects of very amateur home auto electricians.

You are doing the right thing by driving the car and cataloging its strengths and weaknesses but its becoming obvious that you have a fairly unsorted car that has had a succession of less caring owners. We have all been there, Mate.

See if you can talk a local Mini owner to have a good look at it for you. A mini owner because they mostly already know the common problems.

Yeah, thats the reason I am driving it... to try to find bugs :) But hopefully I dont find a bug that leaves me stranded cause the wife still isnt keen on the Mini... and wont come pick me up ... haha.

I'll find that darn loose connection... I thought I found em all but was kidding myself.

How is the grounding terminal of the battery to the car? usually this is an area that is Mucho Rustico and can cause issues. Mine had lots of battery connection problems here and I had to undo the terminal to the body and clean it all up with a wire wheel and a file...

Dont say that! Thats the only connection left.
I didnt fix that one cause it looked ok... but I thought... I might as well, then went nah, then went ok, im going to work... do it later :)

PS: Now it looks like its not charging so I may have a flat :)
