Hey all,

Every morning in winter my mini doesnt warm up at all, the temp needle (std) stays either just on the line or about 1mm above. It stalls when I stop as well.

What can I do to fix this?

1975 Mini Clubman S - 1100 - 1.25 SU - K&N filter

I was thinking of replacing the K&N filter with the standard one to get some more warm air into the carbie?

Can be fixed by moving out of Canberra, -6 and -7 overnight doesn't help. But seriously you could check your thermostat. If it is stuck open even a tiny bit, the water just keeps going round and cools in the radiator, it doesn't get time to heat up in the block. Mine was doing the same thing. It still isn't right but its better. Maybe the standard air filter would help, if it is sucking the air straight off the manifold, not sure. I might try that too.

Change the thermostat to one that opens later (check the PO hasn't removed it or drilled holes through it) 84 degrees is standard, mine has one that opens at 72 for better heat control in summer).

If the thermostat is fine, then block off part of the grill, (duct tape behind it, or perspex for a more professional look.)

That could help..... :lol: but its bloody cold at 6:30 in the morning!

Also, if you get electronic ignition, it will run better in the cold. Mine also used to continually die in the cold (we get -7 mornings here too!), until I replaced the ignition switch, which was barely letting any current through to the coil! Lucky it went at all!

Gulgong was also -7 last night.
The following two photo's were taken at about 8.30 am this morning
Just as a matter of interest - the water to the house is still frozen now - gotta do some lagging.

Emm - its only code outside at twilight, night and dawn. The rest of the time its t-shirt weather, although we cheat. The fire has been alight since mid may. Days up to 21 deg C and that a product of the ongoing drought. Clear cloudless days and clear cloudless nights.

We had our first seasons lamb born this morning and I saw it while the frost was still about. It was steaming.

Pretty common problem. If you're keen put a new 84* thermostat in, and swap back to a 74 in summer. Also, make sure it actually HAS a thermostat, some people remove them thinking it will fix all their cooling problems in summer, usually doesn't! :lol: You can also partially block off your grille in front of the alternator to lessen the air flow through the radiator. Not sure how effective it will be but worth a try.

The problem I always got with my SU was that it iced up really badly, especially along Parkes way under Black mountain (drops at least 5 degrees there, maybe more). Causes the car the rocket along at 90km/h which isn't good! Especially when I want to STOP!

Haven't had a chance to renew car rego this week, had to take the motorbike to work this morning. Never had my helmet visor ice up before! Had to ride all the way from Belconnen to Fyshwick with the visor open, suffice to say I was COLD :D

yeah i'm thinking that the thermo would be a good idea

hmm...neva had my su freeze - touch wood
when i get to deakin its colder and my car stalls around a round-a-bout everyday!

ouch...did you have a face after that? :shock:
