Post subject:  Extractors , now with pic's , what size is the motor now ?
Picked up another set of the pressed steel (made from two bits of pressed sheet steel and then welded along the join) extractors , I always thought they were pretty much only on the 997 and 998 coopers but not sure , what did these come off ?

Ok , thank's , something to put to one side then , included a shot of them for arguments sake anyway , leaning on the engine cover/roof/bootlid/spoiler of the nota fang . Also , pulled the head off the supposedly rebuilt motor (nervously I might add , I got all the bits off a guy who accidentally bought the stuff at an auction and was told it was rebuilt :roll: It will be stripped and get new gaskets and seals before it's used anyway as I've no idea how long it's been sitting for) and was greeted by some super shiny new pistons , WOOHOO . ANyone know what capacity the motor is now , the piston doesn't have the normal plus so many thou , it just says +.508 ?????? and no brand I can see . The block is an 1100 but no guarantee it's an 1100 crank as whoever rebuilt this stuff seems to have known mini's and used new parts where possible (new rocker gear even) . ALso there's a bragging pic of the rebuilt twin carbs , seem to have been rebuilt and then got a little bit of moisture on them at some stage so will be stripped again before use . I'll be off for a few days so will check to see if anyones got any hints when I get back .

Didn't engine reconditioners like GEM and Higginbottom do funny things with engine reco's like using weird oversize pistons and undersize crankshaft journal. Things like .15 thou oversize bores and pistons so that the engine would need to be reconditioned (by them presumably) at some later stage. I heard that this was to stop home mechanics simply fitting rings and bearings.

Obviously these pistons and bearings were only available to GEM etc.

0.508mm oversize which is +020, \
25.4/0.508= 50 (1 inch / 0.508mm)
1000\50 = 20 (1 inch/50 = 20 thou)

Might get a few weeks out of those pistons wouldn't you say ........

Nota fang will be fun whenever I get time to finish it , someone at some stage in it's life has re-arranged the roll bar over the drivers head so I need to modify (waiting till my wife takes the little fella shopping or somewhere for a few hours so I can make some noise downstaris without disturbing him) it to be able to fit the whale tail . This is a slightly different rear to the normal ones , it's a later version to incorporate the rear spoiler . To give you an idea on size , the roof/boot/spoiler whatever you want to call it is a couple of inches taller than a mini's bonnet ..... I hope to be able to do a mock-up fit of all the rear panels (only just delivered by Nav who picked them up in Brisbane for me , provided by a guy who races a Fang for the "right price" , just need to fix a crack in one rear guard .) for a picture in the next few weeks , I'll post it then .

And I can't believe nobodies noticed the bloody great mud wasp nest in the right hand carb yet , only posted the pic to see the comments ....... They're industrious little buggers , the carbs have been wrapped in that semi stretchy shrink wrap industrial plastic stuff since being rebuilt , hence the slight corrosion on the alloy , but the wasps still managed to find a way in to build the nest .....

I saw it and noticed your comments about moisture damage and stripping them down so said nothing.

My local engine reco guy does quite a lot of his work outdoors (under a skillion roof anyway) and says they are the bane of his life especally the smaller variety (not like your one). After any block has been hot dipped and allowed to stand overnight he has to poke wire through all the oil galleries etc because it only takes 18-24 hours and you have a nest

Sports850,

The fabricated extractors from Coopers come in at least 2 slightly different lengths.
The 1275 blocks are approx 1/4" taller than non 1275 blocks (including 970 and 1071 S blocks).
The 1/4" extra height of the 1275 block requires a slightly longer lower pipe section so it will mate up with the attachment hole on the remote housing (PIA to get bolt in without crossthreading) for the pipe clamp.
Don't know the actual length for each different type.

It might be someone else's foot.

I sold a set of those pressed metal extractors for a nice profit recently. They were NOS though. I believe they went onto a GT being restored on the Gold Coast

Yea well I know a guy in Sydney restoring a genuine GT, who would love a set of those in good nic. I believe he will pay a good price too.
