Well uni exams are finally over, so now i get to get squirt back on the road, but this involves some work and one part is an oil change. With squirt being my first mini, and my first car i was just wondering wat oil to use, i was thinking a 20W50, but just thought i would check to see wat everyone else uses?? Thanks! |

a few of us have switched from penrite (forget the grade) to shell 20w-60(?). its cheaper and 'appears' to do the same job. ive have no probs with it so far. things to look out for: Shell, Yellow bottle 5L, "for older engines" 20W-60 |

The search is your friend ![]() What ^^ he said, plus the general consensus is make sure it is non synthetic (mineral) oil, and if you are thinking about spending a little bit extra on your mini, Castrol Edge 25w-60 (for big bore engines) is the way to go. ![]() |

Well, I must admint, We put in HPR50 (50w70) in mine last oil change... but there were reasons behind the madness. I think most people would put in 20w50 or similar. Peter. |

I was told to use HPR30 when I did my oil change in mine... being that it was the first time ive oil changed a mini I'm possibly not the most reliable information source tho ![]() cost about $30 a 5lt bottle... |

I have just had some machining done by Graham Russell, and I asked him about oil, and he strongly recommended Kmart KMX. As a motor mechanic I never would have believed it, but he has had it tested by an "oil chemist". Results were, viscosity does not reduce with heat, detergents don't break down and it has premium additives in it. He uses it in his Minis and BMW's and loves it. |

and something with a SF or SG rating. You have to use this stuff cos the oil is shared with your gearbox. |

I knew a bloke who worked in castrol years ago and had told me about that Kmart brand oil being bottled there, so its probably the same as GTX2 or perhaps Edge ![]() I have used it before and it seems to be good stuff. |

Everytime i use Castrol Edge 25w50 if provides a much better feel to the gearbox. I tried HRP30 for a bit and it just doesn't have the same smoothness to the changes. You don't want synthetic cause it is too slipery and isn't good for the gear's (too thin) baulkrings can't do their job.. I havn't tried the KMart stuff..mainly cause i've never really seen it there and i rarely go to Kmart...but i'd listen to GR. I would either use that or Castrol Edge. Do make sure it's the non-synthetic version though..(you can tell by the price ![]() |

don't think so, i use synthetics only and never had any problems, even shifting is better than with mineral oils. |
