Post subject: | Urgent door hinge questions |
I am hanging the doors on the van within a few days and really need to clarify some things about the special washers that stop the door panel from buckling. I currently have two of the tapered washers and a set of four of the large round ones. Are they absolutely necessary? Where can I buy them from if I do need them? |

I had this problem once. I got some aluminium tube and cut off little bits. I then ground/filed them down for a chamfer. Good luck. |

does the door get affected?? ive just hung my doors on a few weeks ago, and only used the larger washers that were on before hand..just so the nut doesnt go through the hole in the door. the doors dont seem too look too bad. should i be sorting something out soon or will i be fine ?? |

It can deform the metal behind the hinge a little. Really noticeable on fresh paint. |

my doors seem to look fine..And ive got fresh paint on..Is white though. also, i wouldnt be using the gaskets. i tried them. the hinges stuck out more, and looked messy. mine werent a perfect fit, which added to the odd look.. They also let in moisture, promoting the possibilty of rust. |

This was suggested to me by a mechanic profesionalising in MINIS.. and after looking at the gaskets...yeh i could see how they would let it in. |

If you have managed to lose those little schamfed washers or put them in a safe place like I did, another option is to cut a piece of stainless .5mm thick & about 25X30 & use that instead, it spreads the load over a larger area & does'nt distort the door skin. Blue |

and after looking at the gaskets...yeh i could see how they would let it in. The gaskets stop water. They weren't used on my car and 10years after the respray there is a slight bit of rust behind the hinges..hence i have to pull them off, rebush them cause they are now saggy and put a gasket there. |

You will be fine for many years, but look at the back of a hinge, it's hollow and any water that gets in there sits there and evertime you hose the car down, you will get rusty water marks where it leaks down (this is 10 years from now) The gasket does seal this, there are two types. Paper and the thicker rubber ones. No need to start going off at people either. |

eye for an eye. The gaskets i was sold, had a cut out on the side of them..this allowed water to flow into that hollow area in the back of the hinge. |
