Post subject:  Oil Coolers

Is there any point in having a oil cooler? I see them on ebay for sale all the time. I know it would help to keep your engine a bit cooler but would it be worth investing in one?

It doesn't really help cool the engine. It's main purpose is to keep the oil nice and cool so it doesn't break down.

This was more applicable to older oils which were more prone to having problems when they got too hot. Modern oil's are much better and for street use there isn't really a need for it.

They are beneficial for track use and can help on long highway journey's where the oil is getting beat up by the gearbox continuously for a long time..

I had one on my clubby, but when i took the engine out and put it in the moke, it had to come off cause it wouldn't fit.

I had one on my 1310 for years, then the new 1360. The last time motor was out I left it off. Oil pressure (Castrol Formula R 25W/50) is still the same, around town or on freeway.
If you are gonna race it then yeah, otherwise I wouldn't bother. Oils are much better now than back in the 60s.
I'll only bolt this back in for track days, if I find pressure drops.

Was talking to a mate with a Group Nb mini the other day, and Graham Russell had advised him to remove his oil cooler during winter, as the oil wont get ENOUGH temperature into it and this could apparently also be dangerous to the engine :?:

Bob,
Graham says there have been instances lately on race cars of oil pump pin drives shearing when revving engines cold, also if the oil stays too cold it will not evaporate out the acidic products of combustion that find their way past the rings.

BTW oil coolers do NOT make the water run any cooler... so if yer Mini is overheating it won't help.

Kev, i thought that there was a rule of thumb on race engines....

For every 10' of oil temp you remove, you remove 1' of water temp .....

Might have been farenheight though....
