Hi
I'm new to mini's and would like to know more about a 1976 Leyland Clubman S
What type of engine?
size of engine, how many carburretor/s?
Drum or disc at the front?
Size of wheels
type of suspension?

The Clubman S has 998 engine, drum brakes, Clubman flairs, 3 clock dash, single 1.5" SU, 10" rims and dry suspension.

Im not entirely shure about it but i got a 1978 clubman S
998, Drums all round, 10 mags, dry suspension and a single 1 1/2 SU (although not standard)

For that year, the engine mite either be 998/1100

I ask this as I'm looking at this mini but its got twin SU's and front disc brakes
what engines have 2 SU's?

They can be put on anything really , only standard on the cooper range (all round nose) and the clubman GT (71 to 72 only I think) , same goes for disc brakes but these are common swaps . What does the engine number start with , it'll tell us what the engine is .

1978 there were no 1098s built, they finished around 1975 when they went to UK-made 998s.
If you have a 1098 in a 78, it has been swapped in. Or, it's been recond with a 1098 crank and pistons fitted - like 2 1978 `998' motors I have here at the moment. :wink:

Back then, it was 145-10.
Nowadays, you can still have those, or go for the phat 165/70-10s. Wider tread, but approx the same rolling diameter. 8)

is 165/60 legal? as it looks like its sticking out around 20mm or an inch from the flares.
Can I get away with it getting Roadworthy certificate or do I have to get a wider flares or narrower tyres?
I know by law you cant have your tyres wider than the body or sticking out.
But I have seen heaps of mini with tyres like this.

"Legal" is 100mm ground clearance from the LOWEST POINT underneath the car - usually the muffler on a Mini.

And must utilise 2/3 of the suspension travel (or some crap) :P

I know 100mm from ground to your lowest car component is legal except brakes etc
but what I was asking is if 165/60 tyres profie is legal as its extending out of the flares

Read it wrong.
I read it as 20mm from the top of the tyre to the bottom of the flare...


Yes... the tyre must be inline with the body of the car.
Flares can cover it, but the track still must not be greater than 25mm over the factory track.
(SA legislation anyhow)

145 width tyres wouldn't bring much more than 10mm in... so if you are 20mm outside the guards, it would still be classified "illegal" or "unroadworthy" with the 145 tyres.

so now I dont understand why its sticking out too much as the stock tyre profile is 145 and 165 is just a little more than stock.
