Post subject:  Seats- SAAS- Cobra- etc

OK dudes I'm getting serious about a new seat. I pulled the Alfa GTV seat out of the Mini yesterday to weld up the cracked mounts in the X-member- crap, these 2 seats and mounts are HEAVY!
Also around Wakefield Pk on track days I'm sick of hanging on with one hand, steering with the other, and trying to keep James Be, Baracade and the other Mini heroes behind me.. :P I've only got inertia reel belts... :x

Anyhow I now want a new seat(s) and 3-4 point harness. Where's the best (ie cheapest) place to buy SAAS seats or similar? Repco had a sale a while back, but I can't find anything on their website now.

I'm checking out Revolution Racegear and Autobarn today- anywhere else, preferably in Sydney? :?

hey kev,

You looking at getting all new gear?? your probably looking at over a grand for a pair of seats and harnesses. If you want second hand i can get you 2 fixed back buckets like deans for around $350-$400 and harnesses usually go for around $100-$150 a pair. Let us know and ill send you the URL's for the second hand ones.

Het Brad,
s/h would be fine- I'm only looking at 1 seat & harness for now. I'll put a crap 850 seat (light!) in LH side.

Cheers,

<edit> is that price for 1 or 2? if 2, I'd take both.. 8)

I got 2 ‘4 point harnesses and a COBRA race seat came with the car, the bad thing about harnesses is that you go to lean forward to change the stereo etc and you cant reach!!!

Well we sat in lots of seats today. Considering it's a daily driver I'm leaning towards Cobra Classics $355 ea at Revo Racegear. Might eventually get 2 (the wife would like one too, for her Mini), but I'm still looking.... :)

I'd rather get fixed buckets than recliners, due to weight.

They look the part - I've got the cobra cubs which would have been nextto the classics at revolution - but they don't provide nearly the level of support of the high back buckets nor any protection against whiplash type injuries - all things to onsider if you''ll race them. Also many people are aprehensive about using low backs with harnesses because if youre reasonably tall the pressure applied at impact is against your shoulders which are not supported and with the fixed harnessed position the chances of whiplash injuries increase manifold. But as I said the look cool and match the minis very well.

Cheers

I'm interested in getting 2 of these for my 1275 LS, they look good in a Mini. I've never sat in one... anyone know of a place in Melbourne that sells them?

I sat in a high back, fixed bucket AutoTechnica one at Autobarn, was $329, looked cool but I'd need to go to Jenny Craig to fit. And I'm not real big..

I'm not going `racing'- just `track days' at Wakefield Pk, and maybe some Club sprints.

And I'd like enough comfort that I can drive 200 miles without needing a chiropractor afterwards. And, I do drive this thing daily.

Saw lots of prettier seats at Revolution, but my budget won't allow $700-800 per seat... :?

<edit> I'm off to look at BIG BALLS Motorsport now, I'll see how big their nuts are... :P

<EDIT 2> Poeee, you can get Cobras from:
Revolution Racegear,
592 Whitehorse Rd,
Mitcham, Vic
Ph (03) 9873 8700
or email [email protected] and ask for a catalog.

BiG Balls only carry Sparco seats. Their cheapest one is $450 each...

$150 for their cheapest Sparco harness.

The 4WD shop next door only carries Aerotech, starting at $600 ea.. :x

Oh well I'll just keep looking- Cobra Classics are starting to look like a bargain.... :)

Easy fix for that one... Buy a stereo with a remote & velco it to the steering wheel.,.. Problem solved!

How hard is it to change the seats, I've got the standard ones and they suck big time. Do you need to put in custom railings to bolt the in? Where would you go to get that? I like the OBX Daytona Race Seats that where linked, they looked ok.

For Cobra seats there is a `Mini' frame available which picks up on the Mini seat mounts.

Some others have runner kits available, and standard frames, or you can make your own with a welder and some RHS tubing and flat bar..

What about s/h ones out of other cars, like your GTV seats. I sure your going to say you made them yourself (a bit out of my league).

I saw some s/h TX5 ones in ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... gory=43809
Would these be easy to fix? I was thinking cheap seats which where better.
