| Post subject: | gear cluster Id |
Where abouts on the gear cluster's would an id number be , I've found them in the past but am looking at an assembled box and can't find any numbers , I thought previously they were visible without stripping the box ????? |

yeah... I've got an S box like that... could it be a replacement cluster? the machining on the body of the one I have looked a bit different to the one with a number |

It's all an unknown , in a rod change box but has been stripped and rebuilt but the internals are an unknown quantity/parentage ..... |

Counting teeth on a 4 synchro cluster gear won't help. The K had same tooth count as an S(but the tooth profile of the BIG gear that meshes with 1st motion shaft is different). Count the teeth on 1st motion shaft (input gear) instead. Cooper S/Clubman GT is 18T, the K and early Clubby is 17T.

YES that is correct. You can't. The tooth profile of that gear on the 22G1040 S layshaft is fudged to mesh with the 18T S 1st motion. It willl also mesh with the later 18T 1275GT 1st motion, that fits the bigger bearing (18mm) mainshaft. p/no DAM3167. That's what I'm running in Ha-Ha.

Unfortunately, some gear boxes have laygears with no ID/Part numbers. The only one with numbers I have come across are the MK1 & Mk2 Cooper S gears and the Mini K (22G1100, 22G1040 and 22G927 respectively). So you could probably assume that if there's no part no. on it, its a standard laygear which can also be identified by the number of teeth and also the type of layshaft and layshaft bearings it uses. Have fun.

Well, well, well (thats, 3 holes in the ground)....I finally found a subject that got Pete interested enough to sign up to Ausmini  Welcome, share some of that knowledge mate

Thank's for the help guy's , this isn't the gearbox that I suspect to be the "good" one , just another that came with the bundle that I figured I might as well ID while I was going , all apears to be rebuilt with a 3.44:1 diff , rod change and pot joints so will assume it's basic clubby then and file away for future use ..... |
