Post subject:  Wiring Clubman Tacho ?
My 1976 Clubman S wasn't fitted with a tacho so i fitted the one out of a 1975 Clubman S that i scrapped. I am unsure which wire to connect to it as the manual shows a white wire with a blue trace which goes to the coil and i can't locate it. On the back of the tacho there is a flat pin that has a red wire that goes over to a screw behind the fuel and temp guage and the other pin that should be hooked up to the wire to the coil is a round male pin.
Does anyone know what i should do as I don't want to wire it up wrong and burn it out ?

The spade connector which goes to the screw is either the earth or the positive feed for the dash light and main power.
Not too sure which one is which, but i did have some problemos with my tacho (erratic readings) and a new coil fixed this problem.

there were 2 types of clubman tacho's your's which is the single connector type just takes a feed from the -ve of the coil. The other type is a double connector type which aready takes a feed from the coil. On the main loom into the guages is a big plug. that loom also has two white wires with a tracer that are connected together. that type is inline with your dissy on the +side of the tacho. if you try and use these on the single it won't work and your car won't start. I am sure someone will correct me if they think that i am wrong.

You are right there , i did use those two wires which are joined together and the car didnt start.
Should i just run another wire to the coil ?
And do i join it to the + or - ?

-ve and yes you will need to run another wire. Just don't use black or green. It's a very quick way to confuse auto electricians.

I got my old tacho working eventually, it had 4 wires, Im pretty sure they ended up as so:
green - -ve coil
red - power
black - earth
white - lights
but it was mounted in a hole Id cut in the dash and I didnt think it (the hole) would get through licensing, so I removed it and filled in the hole, covered the dash with carpet.
Now I want to build a custom dash and mount this tacho I found in a wreck so that it makes a triple cluster, all guages looking the same.

Question:
There is only 2 wires and a plastic green ribbon coming out of this tacho, would it be
red - power
white - -ve coil
green ribbon - earth?

No-one willing to have a guess as to where I connect these 2 wires and which wire to the terminal that now has the ribbon attached :?:
It would look so much nicer with the tacho same style as the other guages, have already cut out the mdf facia board for the dash, just want to confirm if I cut 2 or 3 big holes in it :)

Your guess will be better than mine ;)

If this tacho wont work I'll put the other one back in the top of the dash
