Im thinking of getting my clubman shell soda blasted back to bare metal... i wanted to know what to paint it with after this stage... my plan is to get it soda blasted, then do all the panel beating / replacing then to paint it.. sooo after the soda blasting should i put 2pak primer on it, or coat it with something like POR-15 rest preventitive paint? or is there something else i should use? |

I dont know much about it, but I hear people use Fish Oil (you can get it for a gun. POR-15 would work but I think you would have to strip it later for paint... well, maybe not 
I would like an answer to this too, as i'll be stripping panels soonish. Peter. |

Anyone got an advice / experience they want to share? basicially i want to know the best process for preventing rust between taking a shell to bare metal and painting it. |

I have little experience, but the idea of covering the shell with oil or WD-40 (or CRC) which needs to be cleaned off later sounds like a bad idea and a waste of time. I believe some people (JAM) have had issues with paint reacting to substances used to protect the shell. Etch primer would be the ticket I would think, but you wouldn't want to leave it exposed to the elements for weeks on end. POR15 isn't intended to be used as a primer under top coat paint, it's more for chassis elements. You could I guess use a primer filler over the top of it, but again it would be rather expensive as POR15 isn't cheap. Also I intend to use products from the same manufacturer (PPG in my case), so there's less risk of a reaction between products. Just my $0.02 + GST + P&P... |

What brand / type of etch primer would i be best to use? or are they all pretty much the same? |

Why don't you ask the place that does the soda blasting. I'm sure they would have some suggestions for you. I'm sure I've heard of people just spraying their car with a single coat of clear after stripping/blasting to protect it, but if I were you, I'd want advice from someone better than me

I've put POR-15 over the rust prone parts of my car. You need to spray a primer over the top before it is completely dry, or buy the official tie coat primer. I've especially put it over the rust repair sections. Tiny cracks and holes in the welds can cause moisture to get in under the paint/bog. One option is to solder over the welds. An aside: put some POR-15 on your boots. Stops the leather getting scuffed up, espcially if you have steel caps. Water proofs them. Just proves how tough and flexible it is. |

My painter told me to spray a light coat of etch primer over it straight after stripping, but if you are going to take a while to do panel work, primers will start to take in moisture. |

As BOB said ask the place that does the soda blasting . We had the traveller done and all the quotes we had they all offered this service Adam
