Hi,

In the pic I have pointed out a few things.
I am converting to a Bosch alternator and wondering how it all wires up. I will ake to sparky if I Must!

So, what I know on other alternators is:
Big Brown cable goes from solenoid to B+ (bolt) - No problem

Now, I have 2 more wires to connect.
Can anyone tell me where they are supposed to go based on THIS alternator.

Also, you will notice that the alternator has a clip with the RED wire coming out. The other half of the clip is a dead end, no wire coming from the clip to the alternator.
Is it supposed to? And where to...

Hope you can help.

Peter.

It's a different size alternator but the symbols are the same.
From the web: http://www.rangerovers.net/rrupgrades/e ... nator.html

Connecting the Wiring

The wiring is so simple, once you know what the function of the wire is.

Your colors may vary, but my vehicle had the following colors:
Thick brown wire (battery lead), goes to alternator battery stud (Bat). I replaced it with a 4 ga. red wire to the firewall terminal.
Brown with yellow stripe goes to D+ on Bosch alternator (dash light).
White with slate stripe goes to W on Bosch alternator (tach lead).

Also a good diagram is found further down the page here:

I see.

On the Mini I dont have White with slate stripe.
Would that be the Brown with Blue stripe? to go to W on Bosch alternator

Cheers,
Peter.

I think the red wire and it's corresponding wire out of the plug should go to your charge warning light.

I have a similar Bosch unit and only have the two wires connected - B terminal to solenoid and (your red wire to) warning light.

I have nothing connected to my "W" terminal. I do not believe it is used.

(The un-connected red taped terminal here is a remnant from a previous Lucas conversion)

When you've finished this, please let us know where you got the lower adjustment arm from. You might not have the same obstruction issues (engine mount) I had with the Minor. I tried a 180 degree housing like you've got there and I would have needed an adjustment arm shaped like a hockey stick and a long fan belt to make it work.

The "W" terminal is only used for auto chokes and the such. This plug should only be putting out 6-8 volts and very minimal amps.

The terminal marked "W" on the most types of Alternators is a taping from one of the three phased on the stator windings. This produces approx 8 Volts AC. (Alternating Current) It is usually used to operate things like electric chokes or on some diesel applications a Tacho. On a Mini you do not need to use this terminal.
Like you already know the B+ goes to battery positive and make sure it is heavy enough to carry the Charging current. The terminal marked D+ should go to the Ign Warning lamp.
In case one uses an alternator that has a Bosch RE 60 regulator.
The two wires which should be coming off the regulator plug and marked "S" and "L" should be connect to:-
"S" goes straight to B+ aswell as it is the sensing wire for the regulator.
"L" goes to the Alternator/Ignition warning lamp.

"Always" if you are not sure of what you are doing seek professional assistance.
P.S. Don't let the SMOKE out of the Alternator as it will not work again !
