Post subject:  Paint & Guns - brands
Hey, just wondering if any one can help me out with brands etc of paints and guns.

I know PPG and Motorspray are pretty good paints - has any one heard of "Concept" paints, they used to be called "Regal". I havn't heard any complaints about them. If its no good does anyone know where I can get PPG from in Sydney?

How much difference does good (expensive) paint make over average paint anyway?

Also - whats all this about HVLP spray guns? is this a brand or a type of gun? I'm spraying a metallic acrylic paint out of a gravity fed "STAR" brand gun - has anyone heard of "star"?

HVLP means high volume, low pressure. I believe they're designed internally to vaporise the paint better, so you don't need a high pressure to achieve an effective spray. This means you have a lot less spray in the air floating over everything, so less wastage, better coverage.

The big brand is De Vilbis (sp?) but these are professional tools and priced accordingly. I have a cheaper one (can't remember the name) and it works very well indeed. It was NZ$160 but available for much less now as the cheaper brands are HVLP. But the upshot is you really want an HVLP gun, not a Supercheap or similar one. I like gravity fed (cup above the gun) rather than with the cup below as the balance is better and it's easier to paint horizontal panels.

We sprayed my red Mini in Concept Paints acrylic lacquer 12 years ago.
I reckon it's OK, PPG might be better? but is lots dearer.

Brad (13secmini) painted his wife's Clubby in their custom mixed Lipstick Pink acrylic, it turned out good too.

Likewise the pearl white `matic he did, and Spiro the Moke were both Concept Paints 2- pack. :wink:
