Factory applied filler was used inside the gutter outer lip back in the 60s, dunno if all Minis got it.
Hard to tell now as most have been repainted and most people don't bother with redoing it.
I put Sikaflex into mine, was a bastard to do without making a mess.

Hi all - just a couple of questions before paint goes on mini.

1. When a cars been stripped to bare metal and you're about to repaint, how much (if any) sealer goes into the seams and into the gutters?

2. Does anyone here have any pics that may be of assistance.

3. My panel beater's asked me if I know anyone in Melbourne with an original (un-restored) mini with the original paint on it - preferably a late(ish) model clubby. He wants to have a look at one before he paints mine. He'd be able to go and see the car in or near Melbourne but would be happier if the mini could pay him a visit in Southbank? You'd get to see my car as a bonus :wink:

Is there anyone here that can help with any/all of my above questions?

ummmmm ..... a couple of close-ups of the seams (seam covers) ... see if you can get along the "underside" of the seam as well?

Also if you can get something looking inside the roof gutter maybe?

hmmmm -dunno what else. Maybe if there is part of one of the seams that has worn more get a pic of that too??

It used to be a dulux brush on seam sealant, just brush on and it would dry flat and ready to prime over, don't know if you can still get it as i believe PPG own the dulux brand name so might have to check with them

Thanks HEAPS for that. So I've heard a couple of different things about this now. Some don't use any sealer at all! My painter thinks this is pretty risky in terms of rusting down the track. I'd be interested in others thoughts on this. Does anyone here know what they used in the factroy to seal the seams/roof gutters on the clubbies? Chris? Where are you?? Also again PLEASE if there's anyone in or close to Melbourne with a mini with original paint, who wouldn't mind being visited by my panel beater PLEASE let me know ASAP.

What made you use this stuff and how long ago did you apply it and do you think it's worthwhile doing it? Cheers mate.

I have just started looking at this too for my moke. There are a range of Sikaflex urethane based products that are paintable. I have used their products in marine & heavy industry for years, & they are of the highest quality. Unpainted Sikaflex will last about 8 years on the exposed deck of a yacht. They do a large range for the automotive industry, but I'm tying to find which products are available "off the shelf" without having to order by the carton.

OK - so I just went down to the panelshop and one of the main things he wants to see is the area where the front guard is welded to the A frame and windscreen pillar. There's a spot where all three panels meet which is welded and we want to know what this looks like painted. Is it a smoooooth finish or are the welds exposed? A close up pic of that spot would be great too (as well as the others). Let me know if I'm making no sense at all and I'll post a pic of the spot I mean. Cheers, BC.

I used the sikaflex product as a dripcheck on a Renault I restored. Once you apply the bead (smallest possible quantity) dip a rag in thinners and run your finger inside the wet rag down the seam to even it off and finish off nicely. Any excess can be wiped off with the same rag but it needs to be done quickly before it dries. I did the Renault this way and it came up well. Primed and painted over it as someone else mentioned. On my clubby we did replace one of the rear vertical seam covers and I"m pretty sure I did the same thing. KB
