I've started to try and track down my 'petrol fumes' problem. I discussed it with a couple of friends (yes I have some... sort of) and the first source of the problem we're looking at is the weber.

1 - What's the best way to clean the filter as it seems clogged up with dust/dirt and crap from the cover (orange circle)?
2 - Should there be anything screwed into the holes circled in green?
3 - If there seems to be petrol leaking from underneath where the weber meets the redline manifold (blue circle), would a gasket/carby kit fix this problem?


Advice would be much appreciated

check the float is not cracked. and the fuel pump is over pressurizing the fuel camber. it is to check just take the top off the carb and sqeeze the float gentley if they feel really soft they are normaly cracked.

The part you have circled in aqua, there should be a soft mount kit there...
Its basically two rubber o-rings (four total - two on each side of the manifold)
The rubber can perish over time with the fuel. so yes.

Webers are known to spit fuel backwards sometimes, Stuweys did it, everyone elses Weber i know does it.
I dunno if there is a cure or not?

The green circles look like they are just linkage upright holes.
See if the holes go thru to the manifold, if they do, stick two bolts in the holes (or whatever) to get a complete air seal.

1. If it still has the Lynx foam, bin it and buy the Unifilter replacement foam. $8.90 off their website, or more $$ at most speed shops.
Unifilter recommends mineral turps for cleaning the foam, then oil with their Unifilter oil. It's tacky stuff. Don't use motor oil... it's flammable.

2. No, those 2 holes are just threaded for a linkage kit, the holes don't go into the manifold.

3. You have the soft mount kit fitted, not a gasket- the O-rings that seal it are probably worn or gone hard. Buy new ones.

Cool... ok so if I've ordered a 'carby kit' (I think they ordered it from fuelmeiser - code WE-805) would that include the soft mount kit?

(PS... Be a man , you know you love the throaty sound of the Weber... the smells just become a given)

It'll help- no fuel leaks.
Mine is still a little smelly when running breathers into a catch tank on track days, but for normal running around with breathers to a PCV in the manifold, I have no fuel smells.
My carb is a Dellorto 45- same horse, different colour...

Just a note. If you fit the rubber gasket/seals (circled Blue) make sure you don't over tighten them. The carby should have a slight up and down flex. It should be very firm but not bolted solid.

If you need parts/seals for the Weber go and see Brian at LInk Automotive in Mitcham. He generally has everything in stock.

You may also want to look at the gasket for the lid of the carby. They can leak at times.

If none of the recommendations fix the problem simply change to AVGAS then the smell will at least be really sweet.
