OK all of you have worked on minis for some time and guessing that some of you have more experience than other at removing motors etc.

Well i was asked the other day how quick i can remove a motor from a car that is driven into my workshop.

so how long did it take you guys?

bare in mind it was driven in and not standing over night, also had fluids in etc, it is a show condition car so i cant just hack at it and rip it out.
the subframe stayed in the carna dnt he motor totally seperate on the floor.

I could do it in an hour but that is a bit if a rush and mostly unneccessary rush.

The slowest parts are getting the front safely up off the ground to drop out the pot joints and to drift out the connecting pin on the rod change mechanism. Engine mount bolts are a bit of a hoot too but.....

If it was my show condition car I wouldn't want anyone doing anything to it in a hurry.

I'm confused about time, I think this is only used if you are getting paid for it.

I usually work in beers, not fussed though, tooheys new or carlton draught. I would say if 2 mates, probably 6 pack and it's out for rod change or half carton (rounding 6 packs) for a remote with hardy spicers.

Would be complicated to remove a head say as the actual time might only be a 1/2 bottle, but the crapping on before/after would make it end up being a six pack.

I built a mini panel van with a mate from bare shell to running/roadworthy in a mini bootfull (it was half a mini up-ended so the boot was on top) of beers. I think it was 6 cartons or so....

Anyway, depends on whats fitted. I dump fluids while undoing manifolds. If clubman late model rod change with stock carby & zoorst it would be well out in under an hour. If roundy with remote box and with stupid maniflow extractors and hardy spicer drive shafts then probably more like 1.5-2.5hrs being careful not to scratch anything. Thats at a guess, but I've never needed to rush anything and I wouldn't remove radiator for extraction.

Scrappers last motor out/in took 2.5 hours total, about 30-40mins to get it out an hour or so of fixing the gear selector and an hour to get back in and fire up. We had a race the next day and got to bed before midnight

Cheers
AARON

26 minutes is my record for getting the motor out of my Cooper S, that included taking out the brake booster, thats a job i hate doing. :(

Hey guys - do you think someone could maybe write a "how to" on the engine removal on a round nose?

My mechanic is pulling the whole subframe out to do it - but I am sure there must be a quicker more efficent way - or is this the quickest?

I'm paying by the hour so if there is a better way for him to do it, I should pass it on.

Thanks heaps,

jacks.

If your mechanic is pulling the subframe out you need to find a mechanic that knows what he is doing.
With minis there is a hard way of doing things and then there is an even harder way. Your mechanic is taking the second option.

took me last time to take the suzi motor out was just over 50 mins and i had my clutch plate in my hand .. thats taking off dump pipe, turbo and manifold, oil/water lines for turbo , rad, reversed alt and brackets, hydro clutch bracket, axels , gear shift all the fookin wiring and stuff, 4 eng mounts .. i used to have all different containers for all diff nuts and bolts, now i use a 9l bucket and throw all the shiz in there lol

this is with not 1 air tool, but a 3/8 socket set and a hammer.. and couple of screw drivers, oh and a big adjusty spanner and a huge bar for the hub nuts lol

took me 4 hours to R&R eng one sunday night, (incl dinner) was driving at 12:20 , started at 8.. not bad out in the dark cold carport

Ha!!!!

Have got you all there, i have em out in 20mins plenty/most of the times
But that`s just pretty stock mini engines tho

HOWEVER!!! if they were cooper "S" with twins & sump gaurd & booster & air horns & car alarm & winscreen washer bottle & all that extra god dam stoopid sh!t all throughout the engine bay then a fair bit longer of course.

i , (on my own) had a std 998 donk out & diff swapped over & ready to go back in in 25mins one day & that was old skool rubber U/Js car :-)

if/when 2 people (who "KNOW" what they`re doin & have worked together on them 2gether for ages) rip em out, then you end up with this sort of "Telepathy" thing goin on, each person "KNOWS" exactly what the other is & has done & is allready or allready has done the other sh!t...Like where me & my dad had one out, ripped the clutch & box off it & swaped over the shoddiy fitted bridge piece seal (one of our mechs at that time had allready stuffed the job up so we had to do it again late one arvo after they`d all left to go home, oil pissing everywhere & customer standing there waiting to drive it home---yeah, not a good look) & back together & in the car & running again in 35mins, No Sh!t!!! that` was a long while ago tho when my dad had the whip out on me, these days i`m a fair bit more relaxed with the little suckers.

They`re way way quicker with pottys than the "good old days" (of rubber Unis with extreamly sore arms just holding them up there undoing the dam u-bolts for so long) i have special little flexy drive extensions & nifty little air tools for this job now days tho. easy-peasy :-)

love this topic, bestest everest!!!!!!!!!

:-)

spose this one is just a case of "FIGJAM" :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

sorry, but i win this one :-) :-) :-) :-)

Hey Matt,

You sound like the right guy for the "how to" article.

What do you reckon?
