Having lent my Haynes manual to a mate, i am here wondering how to take the petrol tank out of the way to get to the back of the tail light (LHS duh) so i can put my new clear jobbies in. If someone can give me a rundown of the Dummies guide that would be great. |

Do you need to change the whole unit or can you just change the lens? Anyhow, here is how I would do it. 1. Remove petrol cap and drain petrol tank by siphoning through filler nozzle into suitable container. 2. When empty as much as possible, use a tube spanner to undo the drain cock from underneath the tank (under the car). Remember to use a spill tray or bucket. I would'nt recommend re-using this portion. 3. Open the boot and undo the nut on the retaining strap. 4. Disconnect the outlet hose. 5. Remove the tank through the boot opening. |

Be sure to drain the tank completly!!!!! You have to take the hose off the bottom of the tank if you are removing it from your vehicle. Don't do what I did and fill your boot with fuel, then have it leak through the numerous rust holes in the boot floor and kill the weeds on the paving below..... ![]() Loosen the tank, lift and move it toward the middle of the boot area, then take the hose off. I did just this at thw wreckers a few days ago. On the subject of fuel tanks....anyone ever seen a Mini fuel tank that isn't rusted?!?!?!? |

You don't need to pull the tank out- just move it sideways enough that you can get your fingies in to pull the wires off & undo the nuts. ![]() |

It's really a bit of pipe with hex on it- comes out near rear of tank towards middle of boot. |

Ok so theres a hole in the boot floor, then this nut is on the bottom? Do you have a pic? As for the strap, theres a bolt i can see and two (i think) wires are earthed onto this bolt. Does the strap just go over the tank and at the back or what? Im puzzled... and i havent even started! ![]() |

on my tank it is a grub screw, not a hex head bolt. |

Does it stick out under the car? IE through a hole in teh boot floor? |

Nope. You would have to poke an allen key up into the tank, through the boot floor to undo it and drain. |

Open the boot and peer under the side of the tank, towards spare wheel. You should be able to see a hole in boot floor, between hold down strap and spare wheel well. BTW unless you are taking tank right out, just undo the strap 1/2 way up where the clamp bolt is. Anton, early cars had the tubehex thingy, going thru the floor. If you just have a plug it there you can probably remove tank with plug still in. ![]() |
