Post subject:  Window Seals and Grill
Hey Guys,

Dug out the old window seals for the van. Now they all are not manufactured rectangles if that makes sense. Are they meant to be like this, or has someone bought a standard rubber strip and cut it to length? (ie can be layed out in a straight line.)

I thought perhaps for the sides, but for the front :shock: , or is this some dodgy work in the past?

Now they all have the lock strips etc. I know on the front this goes to the outside, but how about the rear sides? Also if i use these (depends on what you guys say) should the join be at the top or the bottom of the window (I'm guessing top as water won't pool as much there).

Last but not least, when putting the grill and moustach bit on, what goes on first? Do you use rivets or screws - had a combo in the past.

Only thing i am going to comment on is the grill.
Use screws - you will be taking off the grill time after time - makes changing and setting points so much easier.

A couple of my minis have had bolt affair through the edge of the metal on the apron panel inside the grill area. To this was a chromed bar nut that screwed on. You the simply drilled two holes in the metal supporting the grill and slipped it on. placed the winged nut on did it up and the grill was in place. Simple, quick and secure.

Thanks Mike, the moustache bit goes on first then - so it won't get in the way of taking the grill out?

The main seal I'm concerned with in the front windscreen - I've had a look on ebay and they look to be on cont seal (not cut / no joins to be made).

Normally the front windscreen is a one piece seal so there's no leaks , some people use cut to size rubber though and it normally works but can shrink with age and leak . I thought you were only talking about the sides and not the front windscreen being flat continuous rubber .

Tom , I've just had a look and i've got a spare , unused front windscreen rubber but no locking strip , make me an offer if you want it (what are they to buy now , had this one a couple of years but it's still in it's bag with the powder on it , took it out and it's perfect ), I'll be driving past your place later today as well .

All sorted - the window seals anyway. New mini seal for the front, a trip to clarke rubber @ $9pm had the rear sorted too.

Many hours later armed with a screw driver and soapy water the side windows were finished and the front 85%, more lock strip to go. The sides took almost 1 hour each. The second one was quicker but the extra beers slowed me down.

I think i now know why people weld the side windows back in, it would almost be quicker!
