Okay so the situation is..

When i bought my mini shell it came with number plates - and the number plates to my luck were actually for that car, correct year, mini etc. and it had been registered before in SA. which was confirmed by the transport SA people.

Problem is I dont have the engine number from when it was last registered so I am unable to simply register it - (unless I had this 8 digit number..starting with 101 (an 1100cc). The engine which was in the shell was a 998, and the block i got with it was a 1100 but started with 10y or something like that. anyway, I am unable to find the engine number the car had when it was previously registered.

So they told me I need to get a 'engine number check' up at regency  I dont think they will be looking over the whole car at every little detail, the lady said they will just note the engine number and you recieve a certificate of certification - then the car can be registered...but im worried they might be really picky and find something defectable so it needs the whole inspection :?

So I was just wondering if anyone else had been in the same situation and if it was a quick process or what exactly happened and if ive got anything to worry about.

cheers :D

Can't comment on SA
However, here in NSW , we no longer have "pits". All inspections are done by registered inspectors who are simply motor repairers working in theor own businesses.
I have to take my mini to have the engine number notated after an engine change. It cost the price of a pink slip ($30) and he simply noted down the engine number of a the correct form and handed it to me for the RTA. I had to insisted that he also note the discs as the RTA computer might object. He simply said he was only being paid to check the engine number.

I rather think that with human nature the way it is, your inspection service will react in much the same way. This is provided the car you take in is clean, tidy, with a clean engine and has no obvious faults like major oil leaks, bald tyres and cracked windscreens.

If its a normal road going car in good condition you may not have much to worry about.

SA guys care to further comment.

doesnt your mini have an identification plate inside the engine bay? it should say your engine number on it.
when i put a A+ from an mg metro in my mini, its engine number are on a small pressed steel tag where the normal engine is on the block, the vic roads guys didnt like it very much but i told them thats how the engine came and they had to live with it.

I had to do that on my last car, the one thing you may need that I didnt have was proof of ownership, a receipt or a stat dec saying its not Hot. All they do is pop the bonnet, look at the engine number, threaten to attack your fresh paint with a wire brush while looking for body numbers, then go and pick on some fool in a heavily tinted commodore.

In Australia unlike UK, it's a rego requirement in all states that the numbers are STAMPED into the block.
The tin tag the UK motors have won't pass at most places... they know us villains might swap em.

As Mike says though changing the engine is no big deal in NSW, UNLESS it's a late Mini and you want to put an earlier motor in. Some inspectors get anal at this point, although we were only arguing about a number... on a block that's identical but 4 years earlier.

Solution- find another inspection station...

You will need a receipt for the motor, or a stat declaration to say (eg) it's yours and was registered in your name x years ago, if true.

why would you be worried about a full inspection? surely you wouldn't drive a car that is unsafe and unroadworthy?

I'm in victoria, we don't have yearly roadworthies or inspections either, but as I get older and see more and more cars on the road that really shouldn't be there, I wouldn't complain if they brought it in - my mini would pass a full roadworthy inspection tomorrow, and I like to keep it that way...

you've just rebuilt the car from scratch, so everything should be right - right?

Stef... you won't have any dramas mate.
As Chris said, they'd rather pick on the Commo people than the Mini folk.
These people (at ID inspection) aren't idiots when it comes to roadworthy matters, and will only get you to go over the pits if they find something that is very much out of place.
I'll gladly come down and give the car a once over before you go down for the ID inspection.
I know the stuff they pick up on... I've done it lots of times

WHen I did the engine swap on the silver flip front (from 1310cc to 998cc) the lady at the rego office filled out all the paperwork, took my money, then handed me a receipt. It wasnt until THAT point that she said "you will be required to have the number checked at Regency...."

At this point, I crap myself. Take a fibreglass flip front mini thru regency???? Youve gotta be kidding.

LUCKILY, after 2 weeks of waiting, I received a letter from Regency saying that the engine swap was approved, and an inspection was not required.

The one good thing about the inspection is, you KNOW your car will be safer afterwards.
