what size is the rear brake bleed Nipple for Drums or do you need a special tool


why didnt they make them all a common size :evil:

or was that just BMC's way of screwing with our minds :shock:

What do information you actually want ?? The specs on a bleed nipple or the correct spanner to use on them ???

I am not good on UNF, AF etc type threads and all that spec stuff but the nipples are either 3/8 AF or 7/16 AF. You need to be careful about the spanners you use on them though. It needs to be a ring spanner and one in good condition as well. Particularly when a nipple has had 30 odd years of butchers attacking it.

Spanners (and sockets) come in two type - those that have 6 flats (just like the nut) and those that have 12 flats/ridges (unlike the nut). The double hex type (12) are easier to put on a nut (or bolt head) but offer less grab. They are also the most common.

The single hex (6) fit over a nut better but are less common because they only go on indiferently. The single hex type is much better for bleed nipples. It does less damage to the nipple.

However, bleed nipple are comparatively cheap. If your are damaged - ditch them and get new ones and then use the proper spanners.

Mike the bleed nipple is much smaller- it's the pipe nut that is 7/16"...

Aftermarket `Brake Equipment' (Italian) wheel cyls have a 7mm bleed nipple... :lol:

I bought a wheel cylinder that had a misiing bleeder a couple of months ago,

The cylinder was half the price cos the bleeder nipple was missing. I thought I would swap an existing bleeder into the new one, but it didn't work, it was a completely different thread. I had to go and find a bleeder that would fit from a brake shop the next day.

So you had best bring a sample of what you are after.

Yeah said I wasn't good on the tech specs but i did say either 7/16 or 3/8 AF - 3/8 thats near 7mm isn't - its not a challenge, just a question.

The point remains that the correct ring spanner is important in this case and a good single hex is the best for brake nipples.

My cooper S type disc caliper bleed nipple are 7/16 - thats where I am getting confused. I know that cause I went and got Auto one to order me in a single hex 7/16 ring spanner.

7mm is the hex size on the new cyls, I think the thread is 5mm or 6mm. Don't have one handy... :wink:

When I last bled my breaks, I used the second smallest spanner in a set of imperial spanners. Can't remember what size it was exactly, but it fitted exactly on one side, and didn't quit fit the other. The front bleed screws used a smaller spanner again.

I had to replace one of the nipples - I was getting some other stuff from a mini garage, and asked the mechanic if he had any - he gave me a couple of spares at no charge. One fit, the other didn't.

I love the way no two screws are alike on a mini :)

My front nipples are 10 metric and the backs are 5 or 7 can't remember now. shits me up the wall each time I need to bleed them. Should probably write it down somewhere hey.
