Post subject:  Hard geard selection and 4th gear stalling

Hi

First its a Clubman S with 1275 motor

its a bit hard to select/shift the gears or maybe cos its my 1st mini...???

anyway main issue for me right now is when driving on 4th gear just maybe 10 secs after shifting from 3rd gear cant tell how fast I was going as the mini doesnt have a speedo cable guessing around 70+ kph revs around 3000+ rpm

the car starts to slow down kinda like running rich and I can hear spark plug/compressed air noise (misfire?) then stalls.
1st through 3rd gear is fine no problems.

What could be causing this problem?

ignition Timing?

sorry I'm a newbie dont know much about my new mini right now as I just got it yesterday
its got disc brakes at the front but not sure if its power assisted
I noticed yesterday the breather hose? the one the attaches on the rocker cover has a small crack on it, might be one of the reason? but it should run rough on idle right if thats the reason but it doesnt.
Anyway I'll replace that ASAP.

If you have disks then there is a big chance you also have a booster....sometimes the tubing from them or the boosters themselves can cause problems and any other vacuum tubing around the engine can cause weird effects...replace any split tubing and see if the problem goes away.

Next step is to make contact with someone who knows there way around Minis and get them to give your car the once over

OK will try and inspect the engine thoroughly tomorrow
the engine kinda looks like the datsun A series engines but most of them are RWDs aside from the old school pulsar
Drove the mini in our complex and put a BIG smile on our faces!!!

Getting used to the gear but still seems a little hard to shift

Ergh.....its around the other way mate.....the Datto looks like an A Series....where do you think they got the idea from :!:

Mini gearchanges are different from more modern cars....none of this self centring stuff between changes, you gotta know where the gears are mate :!:.....you'll get used to it soon enough.

also what's that hose with a green arrow? its disconnected
It is like coming from a steel tube with small hose then someone put a bigger hose on it

does it connect to the carby on the left

Post subject:  No Booster...

No Booster?....please be patient with me and check under your dash and front guards for a booster....that arrowed tube could be going to it.

Otherwise.....I really think you need a Mini expert to look at the way your twin carbies are set up....that is the plumbing and the tune.

Do you have a better photo of the area near that hose?

Also it may well be possible that the booster could have been removed if you only recently brought it.

That hose is (was) the breather hose for the fuel tank... originally plumbed into the charcoal canister.

Where is the charcoal canister mounted? should I connect it back then? it seems like the previous owner tried connecting it to the left SU filter

Well that should just foul up your filter with oily gunk.....have you checked how clean the elements are???
