Post subject:  rover mini on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 11219&rd=1

Hi guys and girls. There's a rover mini on ebay at the moment starting price is $500. One of the questions is Do you have an import approval for this vehicle. Essentially to import with a view to register you need to clear this with Australian vehicle standards before the car reaches Aus. If you don't have one this is a parts car only....unless you know of some other way around it?
The answer to this was A: According to the company I spoke to in regards to registering the car, it shouldn't be a problem as there are other Rover minis in Australia, and they have dealt with them in the past.

My question to all. Can this car be registered in Australia if it doesn't have import approvel papers? Because who ever buys it may end up having to use the car as a parts only vehicle.
Cheers madarsemini

The other Q that took my eye is:
Q: Can you please tell me what needs to be done/costs to get this car licensed. Regards answered on: 03-Oct-04
A: The only thing that I know that needs to be done to get the car registered is having a limiter put on it so that you can't start it in gear.

Not that simple- it would already have an interlock to stop being started in gear, real problem is these early ones (like our old MiniMatics) had no `Park' position which is now required by ADRs.
Later UK autoboxes did have the P but these don't.....!

It's interesting that the seller doesn't mention it has Air Con. Maybe he does not realise.

Same type of A/C as I have stored away to put in my Traveller

BTW Doc, all Mini Autos have an interlock to prevent starting in gear. On the pre-Park boxes you must be Neutral for the starter to turn. No problem with that part - should be easy to get working.

No import approval is more of a problem! If the seller does not have the paperwork there is no way anyone can legally register this car in Oz.

I realize that, as I stated (I've owned 4 AP autos, lol) but current Oz ADRs require a `Park' position. This one doesn't have it, not sure if it's build date is before the cutoff date for this requirement, or not. 8)

The guy says he called some company where they said that registering it wasn't a problem because there were other rover mini's in australia. I think the guy doesn't realize that there are papers that are needed to confirm the car legal on our roads.

ask when the car was offically imported? ages ago? then u'll need the cert from DOTs and the 0405 document (original not photocopy)

It's possible that the car could be still used if there aren't papers.
When I was at Northern mini parts last month I found it intriging that his latest car, a '95 rover was registered as a '72 model. Suppose you won the car and fitted another engine built in Aus. Could the car be used?

the guy now has a buy it now price for it $4500. Bit pricey i think for what his telling us.
Also can that actually work, i mean importing vehciles that are less than 15 years old and registering them as a 15 year old car or older?

New cars reg as old cars sounds dodgy to me, but there were 3 rovers down at NMP, all registered as pre- '75 models.
The way it was put was if a a car (say a '74 clubby) had every component replaced except one, Is it still the original car?
I'd say no, but it depends on body numbers and things like that.

Don't think it is entirely legal. But depends if you are willing to take that chance.

Someone in Qld. got caught selling some clubman body plates that were put on a late model then the guy stupidly tried to re register the clubman. Well they worked this one out.

Trading and swapping of Body numbers and compliance plates, is BLATANTLY ILLEGAL.

It's the sort of thing that chop shops use, and they will even rebuild two trashed cars into one. How many people here would like to know they are driving two halves of a car, that have been welded together in some backyard workshop??
