Post subject:  Removing drive shaft from pot joint

I have been working on my mini again and have got stuck trying to remove the drive shaft from the pot joint (I'm trying to replace the CV boot). The manual says to use Rover tool 18G 1243 if its available, but i don't have it. Other than that it says to pull the drive shaft outwards about 25mm then hit the sleeve/flange off the drive shaft using a flat metal bar or similar tool, then remove the drive shaft.

I have tried using a screwdriver and hammer to hit the sleeve off the end of the shaft, but haven't had any luck.

Any suggestions?

Use a bigger hammer....you need a small sledge to just gently drift the shafts out.

Still No luck Richard?

It didn't look like the easiest thing... I guess your grandad didn't have a good enough tool :(

Good Luck Mate

I got a bit further. i think i will be stuck for a while now though because I am don't want to use the screwdriver anymore because i am burring over the end of it and it is from a brand new set. I'll have to go to the 2nd hand tool shop during the week and get another one.

Although, it is the biggest screwdriver in the set so i don't think it will ever get used apart from levering things and stirring paint :)

unfortunately i don't have a BFH. :( I will have to get one from the 2nd hand tool shop too, because it seems like a worthwhile investment

Interesting..i've never had trouble? mine just come out easily? in the hub they are a pain to get in and out..but the pot joint is just a slip fit?

Yeah, i had a little bit of trouble getting them out of the hub, mostly because in the end i only managed to crack the upper and lower ball joints and couldn't fit the puller or ball joint separator on the steering ball joint. I managed to get it out by turning the steering to the right point.

I have read on here before that they just slide out, but mine are definitely don't :x

I think it is held on by some sort of clip inside the joint, so maybe the clip in yours is missing?

Don't mess aroung giving it little fairy taps with a little hammer.

All it needs is one hit with a big hammer.

If it takes more than one hit you are not doing it right.

Waaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop Stop Stop

You are trying to replace a CV boot - you do not need to to bash out a pot joint -You do not need to bash out a pot joint.

Undo the large nut holding the CV into the disc - drum set up - same deal both systems different sized nut - thats all.

Now - jack the car up and safely place it on jack stands. Take off the front wheels and use a ball joint splitter to separate the top ball joint taper from the eye on the hub. Pull the whole assembly towards you and the inner CV (pot joint) cage, balls and boot will pull out and off the steel circular pot joint holder. There are six balls - they will fall out of the cage so watch for them.

Then continue to undo the outer nut holding the CV into the hub. When the nut is off, withdraw the entire axle/halfshaft assay to towards the gearbox and down. With the axles out - give the CV assay a couple of downward bashes with a FBH - if you are not game take it to a garage - theywill charge you peanuts - with the CV off , replace the boot and press the Cv back onto the axle. Its only held on by a expandable flex steel circlip type of washer.

Put the whole thing back together, slip it into the CV, bolt it up to the Disc or drum hub. Repack the inner CV (pot joint) with CV grease and carefully refit all six balls and slip the assay into the round pot joint holder as you refit the top ball joint. Do it carefully and it may take several goes but you must have all six balls in the round pot joint holder. seal the inner CV boot and tighten the alloy strip. Tighten the ball joint bolt until the taper is locked and move to the other side.

You do not need to bash out the inner pot joint holder - and if you do you are only going to dump the entire sump contents onto the what ever surface the car is jacked up on - be it lawn, concrete or the BBQ pavers.

Well done Mike, no one picked up on that... to tell him how to do what he actually wants :D

BUT, if you do want the Pot joint seperated from the diff you WILL need to undo the ball joint (bottom on at least) Otherwise, its not going anywhere ;) As you found already :)

So the hub is hanging by the tie rod end....if you give the pot a descent whack it should seperate with all that movement .....obviously, tie rods seperated would be better.....and obviously if he had followed you method from the start we wouldn't be here

I am confused... Pot joint (that goes into the diff) or CV (that is held on by the hub not on the brake hub)?? These are 2 very different things...

I think richarde is talking about the inner pot joint and he is trying to pop them off to clean them...?
