Is it a requirement only by NSW or by all states that when you throw in a 1275cc + motor that the Front Drums must be upgraded to Front Disc brakes?

All states I think. Unless you have one of the south african minis that came out with a 1275 and drums.

Yes it is a requirement in NSW. When you change a motor, you are required to have the engine number inspected and verified (on the correct form) by a licensed vehicle inspector. You are then required to notify the RTA of the engine change and its number (via the inspection form).

The inspectors are only interested in verifying the engine number and do not inspect the whole car as in a pink slip. Mostly the inspectors dont know about the disc brake requirement so you have to tell them to notate that is has disc brakes. If you dont, it will pop up on the RTA computer and they will send you back to the inpector.

In any case, as said previously, there is a world of difference between drums and discs. The amount of torque and performance a 1275 has is immensly greater then small bore motors (except for some highly modified ones, of course) and you tend to use the extra performance more - even in traffic. You must be able to pull the thing up in a straight line quickly. Drums dont have that capacity at the higher speeds.

many will argue how good their drums are - however - discs are a requirement with a 1275 engine.

Also worth noting the original 1275 moke (rear mounted fuel tank , often called export moke) was 1275 with drum brakes , as was a few of the last clubmans produced , they seemed to be getting rid of excess motors in basic clubbies for some reason . It's a grey area though and only legal if the car came out like that but really , as a safety thing if you do anything other than sedate driveing 5 klms to the shops each day discs would be a good idea . Drum brakes are good brakes with regular adjustment but under heavy and constant braking they overheat and fade , you can still go fast with them carefully (as many will say) but for peace of mind discs are better . Remember , the BMW or Ricer in front of you on the windy road with big discs that stopped quicker than you is worth a lot more than your mini and if you hit it with a 1275 and drums your insurance will probably wipe you leaving you to pay for the rear of the other car .....

And these day in NSW you will have to get the car enginnered, as the engine capacity is increased by 15% stupid in know, but thats the laws for ya.

yeah it does seem silly but we had to go through all the rigmorall of the rego places down in sa but if you dont you will never get any insurance

So when did this come in- 2 years ago we uprated Barney (Deluxe body) from a 998 to 1275, no probs with RTA or Shannons...

I've been trying to do the right thing & update the engine number on our clubby that i put the 1275 fuel injected motor in, had drama after drama with blue slip inspectors saying it gotta be enginnered because the capacity has increased by over 15%. I have argued till i was blue in the face that in 1971 (thats the year of or cubby) you could buy a clubman with a 1275 motor in it from the factory. but im getting nowhere.
