Hi can anyone tell what model carb are these on the pic?
or is there a code stamped on the carbies to identify which model it is?

Hi can anyone tell what model carb are these on the pic? or is there a code stamped on the carbies to identify which model it is?

Well judging by the pic those are twin HS2 SUs - 1.25inch carbs such as were fitted to the Cooper S amongst others. I reckon those are the 1.25in HS2 and not say 1.5inch HS4s because the ounting flange to the manifold is vertical (HS4 were diagonal) and there is no rib on the top of the dashpot (HS4s had a rib there). In general HS2s have a "skinnier" dashpot. With the plastic dashpot covers and the never float chambers etc these look like the never HS2s rather than the older H2s for eg. There were numbers on little aluminium plates on top of the fuel float chambers that corresponded to the different states of tune (needle, spring) for different cars - these are important if you are a concourse kind of guy but otherwise with a change of a needle and spring these are essentialy the same carbs. One thing to look out for is the angle of the float chamber which is controled by a small aluminium spacer between the carb body and the float chamber. On minis these were at a slight angle so as to position the chambers verticaly when on the inclined mini manifold. Those from many other cars with more room in the engine bay and hence horizontal manifolds were straight so when mounted in a mini the floats would be at an angle - you gotta modify the plates or get correct ones to keep the float chambers straight. |

Yes they are HS2 1.25in SU's. Do they still have the ID plate under 1 of screws on the float boal lid? It will give an AUD number of some sort followed by L or R or F or R meaing Left or Right carb or Front or Rear Carb. L/R used on transverse engines F/R used on north south engines, this number will also tell u wat type of car it came off. Wont tell u squat about the state of tune or needles???? |
