Post subject:  dual Stebel horns - installation help

here are the diagrams that came with the dual horn kit.

Image

A) which one is relevant for the mini?

B) I cant get it to work for the life of me, in either setup. Maybe i'm doing something wrong. the original horn wires are Purple and Purple with Black Trace.

Any help?

Both diagrams r the same. They utilise a relay to switch the 12v to them, as they are already grounded. I know my car dosnt have a relay for the horn. Maybe the original mini wiring simply supplies a ground for its horn. I cant remember? U need to confirm that when u push ur horn button in, do u get 12v at the horn or if u put ur multimeter on ohms, does it measure a short to ground?

U could just wire it up as they have in the diagram. Fit a relay n switch the 12v to it. The horn button simply supplies a ground for the coil in the relay. This closes a switch which allows 12v to the horn.

The Purple/black wire is from the switch.
The Purple wire is from the fuse.

Using the first diagram , connect your original purple/black wire which is from your horn button , to terminal 85 (S) ( this provides an earth for the relay when button is pushed ). Connect the purple which is your positive from the fuse , to terminals 30 (B) & 86 (M) . Terminal 87 (H) is the positive to active both horns and goes from the relay to the horns as pictured . You need to also earth both horns . Disregard the arrows on the diagram , it only causes confusion ...cheers Alan

Wow, now I'm confused.

As far as I can simplify it, if the horn switches to ground, then you need the first diagram.
Minis switch to ground when using standard horn switches on the stalk or steering wheel.

If you are putting in your own switch with 12 volts from the battery going through it to the horn, then use the second one.

I'll tackle it again tomorrow. I'll set it up with nice new wires and terminals (to eliminate the possibility of that problem). If that doesn't work, then the actual horn button on my indicator stalk might be out of whack. Is there a way to get the end of the indicator stalk off?
