MG's had it, does anybody know how it worked and if its possible to have it applied to a mini. im sure DR mini, matt the mini man and other ausmini guru's have made something similar at some stage 
hopefully i'll have my 16v A series soon and i'd like to be able to sit on the freeway at 1500/2000 rpm. is there anyway to change 4th gear so its rpm sits lower at speed or do you have to change the diff ratio? |

I saw a 6 speed mini 'box in a magazine that is available in the UK. it cost a fortune though. i might still be able to find the magazine if you are interested |

we have a 6 speed box here with overdrive 6th gear, good for well over 140mph, but not the sort of thing you`re talking about, there are 5speed mini boxes avaliable & are basically a std 4speed box with a 5th overdrive added onto the end of it, pretty easy done just cost about $5thou$, |

sorry i just did a search and found about 6 other threads similar to this one.... but still do you have to change the diff ratio to be at a lower rpm doing 100kmph or is there something else you can do? |

just drop in a 2.7 or 2.9 ratio diff... rovers had 'em... |

Yep. it depends how much power you have though - if your acceleration is limited by wheelspin then it probably won't affect it that much (it will still make a difference for higher gears though) |

Just a question but why would you build a 16V and then try and kill it by not allowing it to rev, a 16V is designed to rev and if you want to use only 2000 revs you would be better of with one of the minimans big strokers. The midas with 2.9 diff and 13s does about 20mph per thousand revs in top which is just about perfect for highway and freeway 
The MG and Triumphs used a Laycock overdrive unit which bolts to the back of the gearbox, no way for a mini I am afraid, change diff or get a very expensive 5 or 6 speed box Jon |

All so often i hear about people wanting to lower their revs for highway use, but in plain & simple terms, most times when people do this (like fit a 2.7/2.9/3.1 diff) they just totally KILL the accelleration rate of the car. The poor little things really do like to rev & fitting too tall a diff ratio just bogs them down & you end up with a slug/pig with no grunt. 3.4:1 ratio is allready way too tall geared for the """average""" Joe`s mini, just simply not enough power to pull the 135140mph top speed avaliable from a 3.4:1 crown wheel & pinion assy. BUT!!!... """IF""" you had a turbo charged twin cam fuel injected mini motor , then there`d be enough grunt to pull such a tall gearing However,,, if you fit a 5speed box, with the std 4 speed gear kit & then added the 5th gear is an overdrive,... then that solves the problem & no need to fit a final drive (diff) ratio that`s way too tall geared, this way it becomes the best of both worlds. (CCCCccccc--->compromise))))) OOooohhhh i hate that word but it`s an evil necessity.

It is possible to fit the morris 1500 5 speed box gearset into a rod change mini box housing with some bearing mods , but you've got to find a good 1500 5 speed to start with . I should be talking to the guy who did a few about 20 years ago in the next month or so , I'll get back to you with the details ..... |

Whats the point? Its not going to be quiet whichever way you go... I drove to Geelong and back at 3800RPM (100km/h). Loved it, didn't chew the juice, sustained a decent 7-8L/100km. Aaaaaaaand I'm about to do Sydney and back in ROCKtober for MDU. |
