So, are they worth the extra cost, etc? They do look very purposeful when installed... But do they work ![]() |

From memory , when they were really popular they worked a little bit better than a single webber on a conventional manifold but newer manifolds are better now with a single webber . They look good but the experts are still divided as to whether they're worth it now . |

I've had an 'offer' of a great Roundie shell to restore. There's a million things that i'd like to do, and split webers are just one of them. Cut the firewall back, do it properly, and they just look SO tough. (Yes, its Beanie's blue shell.) |

The real idea for split webers (not the Vizard version) was for racing (and rallying) under the rules of the time you were allowed to change carbies but you had to keep the original manifold. The only way to fit a waber to a standard manifold was to run splits. A good example was at Bathurst in 1973 when the Torana driven by Peter Brock had three split webers on the standard XU1 manifold (designed for 3 Stromberg 175CDs) The standard mini twin carb manifold is not a very good design and you are much better of running a single weber on a good manifold than running split webers on a bad manifold. You can get a better maniffold than the standard one to run splits but they don't seem to get any more power than when running a single weber. |

There`s quite a lot of "Miths" flying around concerning splits, But in my opinion they work very well for their intended purpose & that is "out & out" full race. The "good" manifolds for them allow a very even distribution of fuel/air right across the whole 4 cyls, & a very "un-interupted" manifold design gives a long, flowing wonderfull amount of time for the fuel to mix well with the air, They also allow for a far far better float bowl arrangement with little tricks up the "old masters" sleeves for helping to stop fuel tumbling/sloshing over into the air jets on hard cornering/ hard braking/hard decelleration (depending on their fittment :ala:- mini/sprite east/west--nth/south layout etc) & very hard to beat in the upper most high end of flow/performace/revs. Not impossible to beat, just very hard to beat. ![]() ![]() That "sloshing fuel into the air jets" thing that i talked about is one of the problems with just about any weber set up on just about any "RACE" car, but easy enough to fix & by quite a few different means. Splits are simply not worth the time/effor/money for a road car, but then that`s just my opinion... & my opinion doesn`t count for much in my books, but then my books are not very ledgable these days,,, & besides i need glasses to read them anyways,,, & i don`t like wearing my glasses either,,,, so there you go,,, another worthless piece of my 2 cents worth once again ![]() Ok,,, I`ll shut up now ![]() |
