Does anyone know what causes Hydro cars bonnets to stay up for far too long when accelerating through each gear?? It is like watching a Whale breaching!!

A fella here tried everything to cure the problem but could not and we noticed a Mini in Wagga having the same problem.

Its almost like a one-way valve is no longer one-way.....believe you can't really disassemble the units to investigate

Check the rear bumpstops. After 30+ years they are probably like mine were- totally broken, stuffed!
Comp rear bumpstops kit will fix it. $72 or so.

Sorry I should have added that the fella down here is one of our "Dr Minis" and fiddled and fussed with bump stops because thats the only thing left. The bump stop changes lessened the impact but did not cure the problem - he sold the car to do that!

The thing is that something must fail inside the hydro unit valving which you can't get at...necessarily...

Fit front shocks as well then... I did. Mine just accelerates horizontally now! 8)

If it goes up and stays up a valve is probably stuck/blocked. Get some more bags..

Slight Hijack here : I have rebuilt the front an rear suspension and the front now sits high (nose up) measurements are all OK on the rear but the front is more. I've been told it will settle once I start driving it - is this the norm?

Drive it around for a while........then let it down if its too high

We are aware of a fella who used to make the Hydro "brews" up at Zetland. Evidently there were THREE! I have no idea why, but thinking maybe normal (Sedans), heavy (Mokes/Vans?) and race/rally duty.

Sorry wasn't clear - it's not hydro - near new solid cones with new standard shocks

Ohhh! so you decided to chime in on a Hydro thread!!!

OK ....drive it around for a while and even take a few jumps!!

Then have another look!!

Are they adjustables? otherwise it is the old ADD or SUBTRACT washers/thicknesses under the trumpets?? You may need to subtract!

If you put in the rear competion bump stops and put in front shocks a hydro mini, the front lifting is not so obvious. I would even go as far as to say it is non existant... the handling is better too 8)

Hydro bags differ between vehicle types (consult the workshop manual for colour bandings which are mostly faded away anyway). The valve system is within the bag and governs the speed of fluid transfer from front to rear. Firstly without draining the fluid you can- add front shocks as mentioned with the competition rear bump stops. Do not let out the pressure, the rebound response is reduced dramatically. If you wish to lower the car machine a small amount off the ballfoot under the front bags, you dont have much to play with but 1 mm machined equates to approx 8mm drop due to the angle of incidence of the upper arm. The same can be done with the rear except you can machine the difference off the rod that connects the ballfoot to the swingarm. For something more serious you can fit (thin) brass washers between the bag and the steel hydro pipes. Drill a 3mm hole in the brass washer and tap it with a ball hammer on soft timber to get a good shape prior to fitting. Alternatively fit gas taps (available at any hardware) to the steel line under the rear of the boot. Just use a hacksaw to remove a small piece of the pipe and the taps are sealed with olives supplied. This will slow fluid transfer and is totally adjustable. FULLY SICK MATE. Do not lock it up totally on the street or you will blow bags. Hydro set up properly can do an excellent job. Hope this helps.

I've seen a couple of Suzuki GTIs in hydro Minis, with these pipes removed, and 4 separate bags and valve fillers. I wonder why they don't blow bags??
Maybe the pressures used are much lower, or something?

dtmini? U out there? 8)

Post subject:  Sand Bag on the Bonnett!!

Thanks All, looks like there is no real cure for the problem - only measures you can take to alleviate the problem.

Very interesting mod from low'n blown....Cheers, Mick

My mate's twin Mini engined paddock buggy runs hydro with all four bags isolated and an individual filler valve for each. It has been driven over rough paddocks for two years at high speeds with no leaks or problems at all.

I have also seen a Moke converted to Hydro with all four bags isolated. I thought about doing this to my Moke for a while. 8)

Not having the front end lift on acceleration takes away half the fun!

Doc - if you're gunna do that you may as well buy a WRX and just watch the trees buzz by! :D

Mine lifts a little, nothing like a stock hydro does though..

WRX's? I have a bit of fun dicing with them (stockers) at Wakefield PK, from the end of the straight up the hill thru the twisty bits, anyhow... 8)
Down the straight, though... psssssssssht... WTF was that??
