Australia Post “Driving Through the Years”

MINI has been given the stamp of approval by Australia Post as part of a special commemoration of the centenary of the Australian driving licence.

The Australia Post “Driving Through the Years” special issue features the Morris 850 among a clutch of cars that made motoring folklore.

The collection was issued just ahead of MINI’s 47th birthday on Saturday 26 August, in time for the ‘special delivery’ of first official images of the New 2007 MINI, and just a few months ahead of the 100th birthday of the inventor of the classic MINI, Sir Alec Issigonis.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, MINI played an important role in the motoring life of Australia, and today there are still many thousands of the classic MINI on our roads, among the 10.4 million registered vehicles.

The first locally made Morris 850s rolled off the BMC production lines in 1961. By 1966, MINI Cooper S models had made such an impact in local motor racing they filled the first nine places at the Gallagher 500 race at Bathurst, a feat unmatched to this day.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bathurst victory, three Team MINI motorsport cars will lap the Mount Panorama circuit on the morning of the 2006 Super Cheap Auto 1000 on 8 October.

Today, MINI Coopers continue to thrill Australia drivers with first class driving excitement. Close to 8,000 new MINIs have been sold in Australia since 2002, and more than 800,000 worldwide.

The MINI stamps can be purchased at any Australia Post outlet, along with a special booklet. Image

Thanks Billycart :)..

And remember potential buyers for these stamps to be actually deemed valuable in the future you will need to buy 9 at a time. With them all being joined still. So as the middle one is still attached at all sides. As this will be the most valuble one compared to the others on the outside in the future.

Im going to buy a full page tommorow :).

You can of course read all about the stamp in Issue 7 of The Mini Experience.

They were only officially launched on 15 August, so your post office should still have them, or be able to order them in. I ordered 1100 of them - that should last about 2 months with our mail-outs.

You might also find some interesting info on stamp collecting in general in the article, but please note, if you intend rushing out and buying heaps, hoping they will be worth a lot of money in the future, don't bother, as decimal stamps generally are not worth any more than face value, unless they are particularly rare - eg, have a missing colour, incomplete perforation, or other production defect. (no, tearing one in half doesn't count). Buying a sheet (do stamps still come in sheets?) so the centre one will be in better condition, is just a good way to sell more stamps. Because so many millions will be printed, there is no rarity value in the stamps.

And before anyone carries on that I know nothing about stamp collecting, while I do not personally collect stamps, I do have an insight into the industry - my brother owns one of the largest philatelic auction houses in the country.

But, of course if you want to get them because there is a Mini on it, then go for it. Please note - the Mini stamp is only one in a set of six. The only way to buy just the Mini stamp is apparently in self-adhesive booklets of ten.

Cheers,
Watto.
