Australia Post “Driving Through the Years”
MINI has been given the stamp of approval by Australia Post as part of a special commemoration of the centenary of the Australian driving licence.
The Australia Post “Driving Through the Years” special issue features the Morris 850 among a clutch of cars that made motoring folklore.
The collection was issued just ahead of MINI’s 47th birthday on Saturday 26 August, in time for the ‘special delivery’ of first official images of the New 2007 MINI, and just a few months ahead of the 100th birthday of the inventor of the classic MINI, Sir Alec Issigonis.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, MINI played an important role in the motoring life of Australia, and today there are still many thousands of the classic MINI on our roads, among the 10.4 million registered vehicles.
The first locally made Morris 850s rolled off the BMC production lines in 1961. By 1966, MINI Cooper S models had made such an impact in local motor racing they filled the first nine places at the Gallagher 500 race at Bathurst, a feat unmatched to this day.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bathurst victory, three Team MINI motorsport cars will lap the Mount Panorama circuit on the morning of the 2006 Super Cheap Auto 1000 on 8 October.
Today, MINI Coopers continue to thrill Australia drivers with first class driving excitement. Close to 8,000 new MINIs have been sold in Australia since 2002, and more than 800,000 worldwide.
The MINI stamps can be purchased at any Australia Post outlet, along with a special booklet.
