Post subject:  welding in front floor pan
I am wanting to weld in a passenger front floor pan. I am told that this is the worse pan to weld in because of the fuel lines. I was wondering how i could get to these lines in the safest way without killing myself? Also does anyone have a step to step process of how to weld in floor pans without twisting of the shell?

remove the lines then with the protector strip that covers the lines bolted up to the new section and the old section tack it in place then remove the protector and weld it up

When I did the 850 front pans, the fuel line was in 3 pieces with bits of clear plastic tube joining it.. :shock:
I flung it away, welded the floors and then bent up a new 5/16" one using steel fuel tube. Robbos etc sell it by the metre and it's easy to shape.

Don't forget the brake line and starter cable on the other side... :lol:

On that side I dropped the brake line out, made a new one of them too. But you can just push it down, and put a bit of steel sheet over it while you're welding.

Make sure the car is sitting on the ground, level, before you cut.
Do one side at a time.
Tack weld it first. Then finish welding it before cutting the other side out.
I welded mine underneath as well, after I put it up on a spit... :wink:

When you welded under the car did you clean the welds, or did you just paint over them? Also thanks for the information makka and dr mini. Im sure it will help. If i get stuck ill just post another question or 2. cheers

Forgot to add, I lapped the panels about 10-25mm, new panel is inside.
I dressed the welds down a bit with the angle grinder and a flap wheel. Then the whole floor got 2 coats of tar epoxy underneath, and one inside. It's good shit- good enough to paint steel boats with for salt water use.
Yeah it's black, but nobody will see it.. this car will be driven- it ain't no trailer queen.. :wink:

Sorry, I didn't have a digicam then. Not much to see now- it's all black!!! :lol:
