| Post subject: | Chromeing |
No i dont mean a can of chrome paint and a plastic bag  I am tossing up whether to get all my moldings and bumpers re -chromed of to paint them. Has anyone had it all done and roughly what did they sting you?. I want to paint them like an aluminium/brushed silver colour but am just trying to avoid the extra work  but at what cost?

When i bought my new stainless Rover bumpers they were about $100 each. I had a heap of bits n pieces chromed and polished. Ended up being about $2000. |

my mate had a whole lot of pieces for his car done only cost him couple of hundred... the trick to getting it cheaper was he went to a factory chrome place which does bulk lots of chrome bolts and other assorted things... he left it with them for 3 months and if they lose anything they are not responsible for it... but it was alot cheaper might be worth calling up a few local places and having a chat... |

I ended up getting a few things chromed through a local guy. I got a rocker cover, 4 overriders, metal door seal covers (polished up not chromed), a hell of a lot of little nuts and bolts that you can see in the interior and a few other little brackets and stuff. It cost me $230 for about 50 - 60 individual items (alot of these were screws and little stuff) but I had a collection of about 10 - 15 big items. No bumpers though. I didn't think it was too bad and he only had them for about 3 weeks. |

Chrome is only microns thick so any marks on the item will show through. Most of the money spent of chrome goes on smoothing and polishing the item before the shine is applied. A couple of hundred for a bumper is reasonable..... Cheers, Ian |

Just buy new stainless ones, i got mine for 80 each, from some guy in gawler, still in plastic wrapping. But apparantly you can get them around that from mini shops now. BTW a micron is a unit of measure but not from thickness of chorme, in vacuum physics it relates to one micrometre of pressure. You meant simply a micrometre which is one millionth of a metre. |

I've got an 850 grille that needs doing whenever I get around to it. I've been todl it's going to be a nightmare and costly cause the 850 grille has 1000 little sections on it. I'm stuck though because I don't think you can get 850 stainless steel grilles and I don't like the look of the 'finned' ones  .
