Howdy, So, the gearbox is on the table, the motor is ready, we flip it onto the box and start doing up the bolts. What a pain in the a$$ we think. How the heck did BMC put the bolts on? NO WAY did someone sit there and do them all up with spanners... and wrench style ones dont fit (the gearbox housing hits) Anyone??? Cheers, Peter. PS: Its on now, but there has to be a quicker, easier way |

The most common single tool to do it was prolly just the worker himself.

It's easiest to do it with the block upside down, then fit box onto motor. I have a few ring/OE spanners with the ring end ground thin. makes it easier...

Rattle gun wont fit there... no room and the engine and gearbox is too close to the nut. Yeah, it was upside down but still a PITA! Oh well, slow and steady I guess... Peter. |

I have a thin walled 7/16ths (1/4 drive) socket with a "wobble" type fittment thingy which i attach to an extension & then to my air tool. sooper dooper cooper kwik, they`re all done within a minute, except for the 2 nuts above the diff, i do them with a spanner. |

thier are a few sectrets that cant be mentioned...but its amazing how a spanner adjust's when its thrown against a walls many times yer block upsidedown and then box ontop always

Hang on - I'll just put on my Anorak.... 
Just had a quick hunt on www.britishpathe.com with a Mini factory search... 
They have a great cradle gizmo - just flip over the engine and down comes the gearbox... but the nut fitting is still a secret..... unlike the head where they have a tool which does up all the nuts at once .....

Another related question.... The half moon seal has a raised lip onone side of it... which way round should this go ? |

The big outer lip goes outwards against the timing cover backplate. Make sure this plate is on the block when you fit the box, or the seal will extrude its way out...
