Could be that the driveshaft coming loose has gone up and caused that damage by the look of it.

Simplest bet would be to get another gearbox case and simply transfer your internals over, or get someone suitably qualified to do it. It is a good couple of hours work to do it. Might also be possible to weld it up. You'd need to speak to a professional about that.

How did the engine lifter bracket go btw?

what type of box is it?
if its rod change ive got a housing in the garage you can have, on the condition you get the flywheel off the motor that the box is attatched too:D

Looks like that driveshaft has come away and knocked a hole in the gearbox. The grind marks on the outside of the engine give that away.

I'm afraid there won't be a warranty on the gearbox from an internal failure point of view, but if they fitted it to the car for you - maybe they left the bolts loose or used the wrong grade of bolts to replace them, then you have a case for warranty.

Are all Mini gearbox cases the same? disregarding the internal conponents but in terms of structure and mountings.

Well about 4 or so weeks ago I was driving DRB33N to work and all of the sudden I accelerated from the traffic lights and she pulled way over to the right lane and I knew something was not right, next thing was I saw a lot of smoke coming from the engine bay so I immediately pulled over and mind you this is Peak hour traffic. So out i walk and I took a peek under the engine and as I guessed the drivers side drive shaft had come undone and there was a huge pile of oil all over the road. At that point it was time to call NRMA road side assistance, tow truck came and took the car back home. The night I got it home I jacked the car up to see where all this oil had come out from but nothing was evident enough to see that caused the amount of oil to leak out, so the car sat there for 4 weeks untouched and just this arvo I pulled out the motor and I inspected the output shafts to see if the seals had been ripped but nothing too obvious and then I look up just above the drivers side output shaft a bloody BIG hole in the back of my gear box casing, OMG I do not want to think what this is gonna cost, mind you the box was moddifed to fit in my straight cut gears and LSD diff. Pics to come shortly.

was the box modified by a professional? would the work be under warranty by any chance? if not.... it could be expensive..

Engine and gearbox built by Greg at Mini Classic.

Anything that is race spec comes with no warranty and that is the case with mine, I know I tightened bolts hard at the joints but I believe over time the buts may have come loose.

Have you called Greig? Talk to him and see what he says. I would think welding it up is the cheapest option. Graham and I were looking at a box from Melbourne that had similar damage, not right through though, but close. Peter.

Greig is off for a few days... snow I think hmmm, I think remote and rod are different casings. I thnik all rod are same and all remote are same. (better double check though ) Peter.

Yes, externally, except that the remote type has an additional rear mounting, in the tunnel below the seat crossmember. <edit> and the Morris 1100/1100S 3 synchro box has a slightly different remote mounting.

I might consider changing the case because the previous owner smashed the gear box into a solid/silent policeman on the road and has been welded up so I am just concerned that the box has become weakend. Been told that mini gear box cases aren't all the strong for high performance motors.
