wanted to know wether anyonehas ever seen or had them selves a 4wd drive moke or successfully jacked one up and made it registerable was thinking of this for an offroad project i am selling my mini and this is the reason because my joy of 4wd and camping hasnt been happening as much as id liked due to my mini would never make it so i was thinking about combing my love of minis with my desire to go offroad pictures would be great cheers bob |

ok cool will do i was thinking more along the lines of something with more power rather than speed perhaps a diesel might require some research to find a diesel 4wd engine that will fit cheers bob |

I dont know if you find a diesel samll enough to fit. Must diesel engines are huge compared to petrol engines of the same capacity. There blocks need to be bigger to handle the greater compression etc. Also most 4wd drive setups small enough (Suzuki/Daihatsu) are longnitudinal rather than transverse so that makes things hard There are people who have converted Mokes to 4wd used dog gear of the diff and a Triumph Herald rear end. The factory even made two called Quadras. There up on the web. |

If your luck you get hold of a Daihatsu Carade 3 cyl turb diesel, fits reasonably well minor mods to sub frame, new drive shafts, goes fairly well much like a reasonable 998 but has excellent fuel economy. |

if you want the very best of both worlds, then i`d expect you maybe better off if you just mount the moke body ontop of a suzuki 4x4 chassis easy enough to do & if done well & engineered, then you shouldn`t have any issues with Dept of Tpt well,,, that`s what i`d do anyways 
suzuki 4x4s are dam good little 4x4s in my opinion |

Matt's advice is good. If you use the complete chassis & running gear out of a Suzuki Sierra or Mitsubishi L300 then it's much easier to get it engineered & passed. My way is the hard way  but should be worth it in the end.

Hi Bob, I realize this is probably not what you were thinking but there was a factory 4WD Moke in New Zealand years ago. A Mr Vickery brought this experimental BMC Moke out from England and it ended up on Stewart Island, the southernmost island of NZ. I believe a few were made with a mind to sell them to the British Army but nothing eventuated. I saw it in circa 1970 and from what I recall, it didn't altogether look like a regualr Moke. It had a 1098 engine and I think 12" wheels. The rear axle drive was taken off the diff housing. Ahhhhhhh, memories! Regards Al |

i read in the mini experiance magazine there's a shop in syd or qld that does the dihatsu 3cyd diesel conversion i'll have to look around for you |

Henry Draper (used to own Northern mini parts) has one (or did have) sorry but i don`t know where it is now tho maybe ask Watto from The Mini Experience Magazine, he seems to be able to keep an eye on these sorts of "special" mini variants, he`s good like that arn`t you Watto???

cheers for all that fellas mounting a moke ontop of a sierra or so sounds good there good little troopers actually considerd buying one afew years ago this is just in the thought stage at the moment along with many other things once i sell the ls then ill be able to decide what i am going to do next even if i dont and up getting a mini as an everyday driver i want top get one to turn into a khana car always wanted to do that cheers bob |
