New everything is the most expensive to do, but I'm with you, new is good. Less stuff can go wrong then.

I'd go get a new Gemini starter motor (ask your local mini guy for the exact model as not all Gemini motors work on the mini). It requires the smallest of minor modifications to fit, and it means you can remove the external starter solenoid. It's pre-engaged, so it starts much MUCH better and sounds better too.

Call Heritage MG, they can provide you with a NEW pre-engaged starter, based on the gemini spec starter, with the mounting holes professionally elongated, and complete fitting instructions for the mini!!

Mine was $160 about 18 months ago.
