you may remember recently alot of people on here including me had a bit of a hassle with mayo in rocker covers? i was speaking to a friend recenly who told me that if there is any at all the head gasket is on the way out, if it's not already, which conflicted with the general consensus on here that it was from the cold weather and short trips and such.

well, with the mayo i was also losing a bit of water which was leading to overheating, and i was having difficulty starting. i had a feeling it was BHG, well, now it's official.

i overheated again last night, so this morning i opened her up to put some water in, and the rad took only 100mls or so. i then checked the dipstick (not poeee, he wasnt there) and sure enough, it was a little milky.

so i now am the proud owner of another BHG. i want to go to geelong soon so i can get the gear i need to change it over. i'm just going to do the gasket, not going to bother getting the engine out, because i'm going to be doing that in a few months anyway to put into the new shell, and i'll get a new head made up, as well as get my block skimmed and whatnot. i'll have a look at the bores to see if they need doing, but hopefully i'll be able to avoid having to get new pistons as well. or do you think i should get the bores honed anyway?

cheers

you need the engine out to get the block skimmed, and you'll need to dismantle the engine if your thinking of new pistons

if your gunna do it, you may as well do the lot in one go, save you taking the engine out several times

The mayo can be a sign of poor breathing and cold weather but it can also be a sign of a blown head gasket. My car has had mayo in the rocker cover for the past 5 years but it does not use a drop of water and it definitely does not have a blown head gasket. Your friend is wrong by stating
Quote:
that if there is any at all the head gasket is on the way out
when it can also mean something else.

I completely agree with Morris 1100.

RULE OF THUMB:

If it's JUST under the rocker cover, then it's cold weather/short trips/poor breathing.

But if it's in the dipstick too, it's a blown head gasket

Make sure that the breathers are hooked up the way thay came from the factory.
Take it for a long run to cook off the water. (Leave the oil cap loose to help the water vapour escape)
