Hi all
I have been flatout and hardly seen Ausmini in weeks...
I had a problem on the way to work the other day ..... No Clutch :( :(
So I got a tow to the mechanics and he let me start pulling the housing off to get in to the clutch in his workshop (he thinks it is throwout bearing)
I am guessing he likes to work on minis as much as the rest of us NOT

Anyway I have most of the housing bolts off and the front engine mount bolt out - But to lift the motor on that side once the back engine mount bolt is out ..... Do I need to remove the radiator off the other side to lift that end of the motor? and Do I need to remove anything else?

Cheers Gerard

I did mine in car recently.

Undo the 2 bolts holding the RH engine mount to the subframe.

Jack the motor up on the RH side. You should only need to raise it 1 inch at the most.

Don't touch the LH side at all.

Undo all the clutch cover bolts, remove the clutch cover. Hopefully you don't have "the bastard bolt" in place. If you do..... good luck with that.

That's it mate......that's all I had to do. Might have to take the starter motor out too....can't remember.

Removing the clutch arm makes it a wee bit easier to access the bolts

I loosen the bolts on the radiator side engine mounts just a few turns. As Anton says, you should only need to raise it by 1-1.5inches on the clutch side.

Be careful of exhaust/gearshift issues if they are close to the body already!

You can pop the clutch/housing off just by unbolting the engine mounts on the right side of the engine (as you are sitting in the car) and popping the steady bar out. Just get a hydrolic jack underneathe with a block of wood on it (so you dont damage the fins on the gearbox). You only need to lift it an inch or so to get to the bolts. It's a squeeze but it can be done.

I did this many a time when the supposed "mechanic" I had forgot to put in the thrust washer on the crank during a rebuild and the car kept stalling when you put your foot on the clutch. It was actually pushing the whole crank about 5mm each time which resulted in a screwed crank and scored bores. But that my friends is a whole nother story.
