Post subject:  &^%$# busted bolt

I ve had enough now.

A bolt, one of the ones used in the front mounting of the rear subframe broke whilst I was tightening. I have tried to drill it out so I can use as Ezout or just drill it out. I have gone through two bits for seemingly no impression the decapitated bolt. A small amount is through the other side into one of the boxes but not enough to weld a head on ...arrggghhhh..

Any suggestions?

I know about busted studs and bolts, I have replaced heaps of SS ones in outboard motors over the years. Oh I'm a fitter by trade so know what I'm doing too.

May be too late now, but...
1. Ezy outs are a waste of time if it's rusted in there (it is) and busted off.
2. I drill the bolt out on center to 5/16". Then I tap it 3/8 UNC and use a starter motor bolt.

Nope its not rusted. It was a new bolt into a clean threaded hole. I cant drill it out it keeps eating bits.

A jobber drill bit won't do it - buy one of those flash Titanium nitride coated ones

... or U could use a carbide one.
I just use nice sharp std HSS drills, not the crappy `made in PRC' ones though.
The TiNi coated ones are pretty, but no harder than a good std HSS one.
I only buy Suttons, P&N or Frost.

Don't run `em fast. Grade 8 bolts are tuff stuff.

<edit> if the 5/16" UNF bolt is still in there, drill it out 7.0mm, then run a 5/16 UNF tap thru it.

Post subject:  Punch

Try a sharp centre punch dead centre...could help the drill bit get started.

or Dremel to square off whats left??? then drill and tap :?:

Thanks to all that offered suggestions.

I got the wrotten thing out by cutting a vertical grove in the end that was in the box (about 1/2mm) with a hacksaw and then backing it enough with a screwdriver to weld on a nut and then voila its out. Yippeee. It took 5 minutes to do and two days to work out what todo. Maybe I should have asked the wife
