Gday there.

ok, so now i have my tacho fitted, i might be able to tune my new engine lil better..

My mechanic says he sets the timing to 12 degrees...

Now, i didnt get to ask at what rpm.

Does anyone have any suggestions at what rpm that would be?
The cam is apparently slighty better than a cooper S. For road driving..

The fly had been lightened, but a rather rough scratch was placed on it. I presume this is 0, as the marker near the radiator points to zero at the same time.

cheers..

What motor do you have and is it worked?

That would be at idle. Any more revs and ur vac advance on ur dizzy (if operating) would advance the timing further, as would the weights inside ur dizzy.

its a worked 1132.

compresion about 9.5 to 1

head ported polished..bigger exaust valves..

lightend balanced fly, conrods..

Cam slightly lumpy at idle..pulls from low down.

im using a 1.5 SU.
(for some reason plugs 2 and 3 are alot darker colour on the tip to plugs 1 and 4)

So u think i should set it to 12 deg at idle? which is about 800rpm?

wat ever ur idle is, yeah thats wat ur timing will b set at.

okay then cheers. :D

would you know why the middle plugs are more of a black than the standard brown?
then the outer ones are rather light in colour, white with a brownish tip...seems like i cant balance it out with the mixture.

Just to give you an idea, my 1380cc idles at 1300-1500 RPM

well mine is idling at 950rpm at the moment....not too lumpy at this point.

But is there a manual/guide book setting for each cam?

I wouldnt know about a guide but just set the idle at what ever RPM just a notch above before it starts to sound like it's going to conk out.

Mine did idle at 1500...until today. I just set it right down and it works much better, dickhead who tuned it, and charged me a lot of money for it tuned it cold and never run it till hoty so the idle when hot was way over, now it just ticks over. Book says 500 rpm for a cooper s motor. Mine dies at that, so I had to put it up above that i got it going good at about 700, but it varies a lot for ome reason, not by much tho. Sorry to steal your thread but... i'm running my car without vacuum advance as cooper s's didnt have it, even tho it's there. As im using an inncorrect dizzy, althought i got a good nissan one to put in soon, but thats another story.... BUT without the vacuum advance at the moment will the engine lose actaul horse power or just behave differently, as I'm dynoing my car in a few weeks and want to have the best possible power for that moment for brag factor, My igntion was timed without vacuum advance so i think i'll leave it but any advice?

vacuum advance won't make any difference, its there for economy reasons.

i have mine idling at about 1000rpm, cammier engines will need more revs than standard ones which can idle about 750

have it so it conks out when cold without the choke.

tune it when its hot

A brand new engine back in the day would have idled at 500, bu the older they get, the higher they will idle.

My 1430 idles between 1200-1400.

it is better with a wilder cam to have them idle up around 1200 to keep a steady oil flow to the valvetrain.

my owners manuals say 750rpm

 500 was TOOO Low! Dam, it's OK when parked and warm but on decelaration the brake booster pulls a lot of vacuum and the rpm goes down, just down enough to stall a slightly modded 1330 cooper s. SO 2moro i'm gonna put it back up to about 750 as that was good before I tryed to go even lower, you see I want that quiet old mini look so ricers in thier lasers and 323's thnk i'll be easy them bam! gone at the lights! 8) But yeah 500 is too low for an S even an newly recoed one, Lucky work is not far and it's all 100 zones without many stops so luckily I only stalled 3 times on the way thee and none on the way back. Next time i'll test drive after each tune.
