I think I have rack issues... not with adeee, but with my 1275 LS.   (waits for slap!)

It's been getting progressively worse over the last month or 2... then today, as i pulled into the driveway and put it at full lock to park it... CLUNK!!! Now every time I move the wheel it clunks.

Now it's as loose as ever.

I whipped both wheels off. The ball joints have no play and the rack isnt moving (ie not loose on the body).

Its tight at the bottom of the column.

Is it time for a new rack and/or column??

Reach under the left hand side and grap the tie-rod where it comes out of the rack and see if it moves up and down with a clunk. It could be the rack bushing.

Will that give a bit of play at the steering wheel?

No. 8) I was just going on the clunk!
If the rack is stuffed it will have play at the steering wheel.
If the rack is not tight on the floor it can have play at the wheel.

If it is the Oz rack with the 2 little Belleville (ie cone-shaped) spring washers, I bet they have broken...
They apply pressure to the rack to keep it meshed with the pinion.
Solution 1: strip it and rebuild. That's what I did. Don't believe people that say parts are NLA.
I got my bearings and Belleville washers from Mini Automotive (in Qld).

or.....
Solution 2: get another rack....

Get a new rack in there asap.

My moke rack did this and I kept driving it for a bit, huge clunk in the middle when turning and a progressively larger free play movement range dead centre before the steering would kick in.

One day I was straightening the car in a carpark and the wheel just kept spinning around . God forbid that happened when I was driving. Anyway learnt my lesson and don't stuff around when the steering shows any sign of wear now.
