Post subject:  the joys of rice boy racing

ahhh, it's fun isn't it - yesterday I was stopped at the lights to turn left where there were 2 left hand turn lanes, a late 90's mirage stopped next to me, body kit, wheels, exhaust, usual rice burner. I was on the left hand side. I took off sedately, but made sure I kept my nose in front of his - lo and behold the next set of lights turned red as we approached. Stopped, waited for the green, and I made a little bit of noise and put myself in front by the length of the bonnet (yes, very short), then the noise from Mr Rice picked up - oh, he does want to play! I nailed it, 45k's in first, 65 in second, grabbed third and backed off - keeping him just the right distance behind me that I could look across and see his face, but still in front. He backed off just before I did. I let him catch up and gave a big grin and a little wave.... sorry Mr Rice, maybe next time, he grinned and waved back, but didn't look that happy. I guess the massive RALLI-ART sticker on his back window doesn't help after all.

 Can I just add... I LOVE MINIS

I just got mine registered. Its a stock 998 at the moment. No mods. Nothing. Sitting next to me at the lights was a Nissan pulsar... 1988 model I think. Its 20 years at least younger. Smartarse P plater. My lane finished 100 meters down the road. I edged forward to let him know I wanted in, he didnt give me room because he thought he would be stuck behind a slow car, I booted the accelerator in, gave a little squeelie and BURNT HIM OFF..!!!

Stock against stock...

squuezed in with centimetres to spare.

MINIS RULE

OoOoOoOoOoOo should we start a "I blew this person off at the lights" subject..!!!

one thing that is very hard to find info on is mini straight line specs

HP is useless because on a mini its so low (its not straight maths to work out power/weight to give whos faster

so anyone got some real figures for stockky minis aswell as mildly and highly modified minis

i'm talking 0-100 and 1/4 miles

chong.. how fast do you reckon yours is?? and how much diff did that dhla make?

and wonder how, why, who

yeh and also people hear of my car scraping 30horsepower and laugh

I was driving through brissie, prolly about 2 years a go now with a friend, when a 2000 model lancer pulled up next to us, 4 kids in the car with their music blaring. I say kids because the driver looked no older then 16.. anyway he rev'ed it and was ready to go, lights went green.. i launched off to a good start... only to find him still at the lights.. he had stalled trying to take off

we met up with them a few lights down, he managed to not stall it.. but still lost.

long live the mighty mini.

My car's just a stock 1098 with extractors and the DHLA. Kev says 60hp? I dunno about numbers but the difference between 1 1/4inch SU vs the Dellorto is worlds apart! there's more power, willingness to rev. Torque is noticeably better, esp on 3rd and 4th climbing up hill! couldn't accelerate up hill before, now it does it willingly.

Previously 1st was hard to get a moving in, now i can easily do 25 mph in first (more if i pushed her, but second and I am at 35mph which is insane compared to before!

I can't wait to have it go as fast as the Doc's car... his is WRX country...

0-100km/h numbers on a mini is irrelevant in my opinion, it's fast to 60km/h but after that the gear ratio lets you down... That's what I think anyway, not sure what the truth is.

Just yesterday i managed to keep her infront of a pulsar SSS at the lights, he was trying too, but after 70 km/h i backed off and he let her rip all the way to 100 (in a 60 zone). That's where mine loses... the post 60km/h mark

Anyway she goes good now, can't ask for more from a stocko. It also needs fine tuning but... Next step... 1310

hey guys i always had the impression that doing something to make a car faster would not necessarily be good for it in the long term
eg. dellorto, superc, turbo etc.

or is it just the driving style of these punks
do we actually know?

Yeah, I have done the same sort of thing a couple of times. The driver of an Audi TT didnt look too happy when i got the jump on him at the lights. Given it wasn't for long but he almost lost it as well as after the lights the road went round a corner (if he could afford a car like that he should be able to afford driving lessons). Also got this souped up Gemini once, he though he was all cool with the chrome gauges on the bonnet and his fluffy dice and had him for 50m or so until I heard the turbo go whooshka but he didnt look happy that i got him for that long and that was is a pretty standard half blown up 1100.

Theres nothing better than the look on their face.

Racing is a touchy subject..

I remember driving around in my old 998 clubby trying to 'race' everything in sight, having a bloody good time mind you (that motor would never give up) best thing about it no one knew as they casually drove past you ;)

Mini's weren't designed for straight line racing IMO, lets face it, many modern cars go faster than even a mild 1275. And i'm talking about even run of the mill Excels and Lancers.

I know where I stand in the scheme of things, but that doesn't stop me having a bit of a go :D , i just don't expect to win :) that being said, i don't go on trying to take cars that are obviously much faster on..like the TT mentioned above...UNLESS i just want to get them to bite so i can see a bit of action. I'll take anything on when it comes to a roundabout though ;)

I've had a 318Ti BMW only slightly edge me out up to 100 and I beat Lancers only 'just'..older 1.5's not the 1.8 or 2.0L, My mates auto barina is about the same (1.3)

If I had to take a stab at my 0-100 i'd say 11sec..

Depends what mini Chong, Kevs can pull 70 in first and 110ish? in 2nd..Gear ratios don't seem to be a problem there...My clubby needs 3 changes to get to a hundred..ok bit more of a prob, but you would think because the gearing is short it would help rather being geared for 240+km/h..just a thought?

Thought above are my opinion only ;)

minis weren't designed for racing at all - Sir Alec designed a boxy little shopping trolley for housewives and nurses that turned out to be perfect, can't say that about any other car since...

I love the smug feeling we can get whether we win or lose...

if we win "haha, you suck, you got beaten by a ****** mini!"

if we lose (sarcastically) "gee, you're ace aren't you, you beat a 38 year old mini in your shiny 2 year old car" (replace the 38 and 2 as required)

was reading an article in minimag about a bloke in the uk who bought a vtec clubby for $23,500 pounds as a finished project. It was putting out around the 200hp range and this guy also owns a lamborghini gallardo to compare performance against. His preference as to what to play with on the weekends........ the clubby. . realistically... if that clubby wasn't down in the 13's i would be surprised...... specs and pic below
