Post subject:  First problem i've had.
Apart from a small oil leak (who hasn't got one...) the mini had a weird electrical problem on Friday.

As i left work i noticed that the round red ignition light was on (dull), as was the one under the fuel guage.
When i pressed the brake pedal the light went bright and the tacho completely stopped. When i released the brake, the lights went dull again and the tacho worked.

So i turned around, went back to work and tried to find the prob... No loose wires i could see, same prob as before, this time i tried other things. I turned on the heater fan, the light went bright but it didn't start. I turned on the headlights, they actually worked with no effect on the ignition lights... The turn signals did not work at all but no effect on the ignition lights. Also noticed that when i pressed the brake that they didn't work at all.

So, after stuffing around for 15 minutes, the problem went away with no idea what caused it. I think that somewhere there is a short in the elec sys.

Has not happened since, but, i am driving to Syd for MDU and don't want it to occur again while on a roadtrip.

Any ideas as to what might cause the abovementioned dilemma?

Get the alternator checked it sounds very much like a diode is on the way out and what happens is the alternator only chages at about 6-7 volts and the ignition light comes on when you turn something on :D

OK... That sounds right i suppose, but what about the headlights?

They would use more volts than the brake lights yet it didn't make the ignition light go on.

Thats because the headlights are not run from the fuses or the ignition system but everything else you turned on is run through the fuses and ignition charging system :D causing load directly to the alternator

What Jon said....and look for any shorting wires....the regular offender is on the left inside the boot....any wiring that looks frazzled or burn't should be replaced and well insulated....check all your earths as well....clean and tight.

I was absolutely gob smacked once when Ians Traveller failed to proceed....no power to the fuel pump....the dicky earth was in the passengers side headlining :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

don't have any oil leaks on any of my motors! :shock:

this prolly doesnt help but i talk to my minis and tell them not to be naughty :oops:

One of my first issue posts on here was re my high beams not working and the warning light being lit dimly constantly. Ednded up being a loose earth RIGHT UP THE FRONT IN THE LOOM!

The little buggers can be hiding ANYWHERE!!! :twisted:

I'm going to sus out the alternator tonight... Not sure if it has an inbuilt reg or it's on the outside. Hopefully the latter!

I also have a modified radiator mounted behind the front grill which makes it difficult to check the loom and ignition.

It did it to me about 18 months ago. clean the fuses, and you'll be set. The fuses that were in it are still the original lucas ones. (no wonder they play up)

gday santo

i had a similar problem, whenever i urned the indictaors on the tacho would die and the red alt lightwould come on. turned out i had blown a fuse, so have a peek in your fuse box! easier than trying to find a dodgy earth!

If i'm correct, there's only two fuse (& two spares)....

I used a 12 volt test light on both sides of the fuses and they were both working.
I'll check the volt reg tonight.

Like i said, clean the fuse terminals :wink:
