Post subject: | Idle speed |
hey, My car has been on the round for about a month now and when started it idles at about 800rpm but as soon as u accelerate and take the rpm over 1500 approx it will only ever go down to 1500. we have tried adjusting the accelerator cable to reduce the idle that way but its at the very end already. Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be that my needle (1 1/2 SU) is gone? |

Have u actually adjusted the idle screw on the carb? If ur needle was worn, it would be really rich at idle. Make sure the piston is not sticking. This could be cause of the piston/dashpot or maybe the jet isnt centred and the needle is binding? |

The same thing used to happen on my old mini. It was the throttle on the carby sticking and not rotating all the way back around to 'zero'. |

yer we adjusted the idle screw on the carb till it wouldnt go down any further, i no i got and exhaust leak from the manifold to the exhaust, but that only happened recently and it hasnt affect the idle at all, im thinking its most likely in the SU, so im just going to have a carby guy look at it |

If it happened recently, how do you know it hasn't affected the idle? I would fix that before you take it and spend big $$ on a 'carby guy' |

i blew a head gasket 2 weeks ago, before i blew the head gasket there flange matched up perfect and i didnt have an exhaust leak then and it still idled at 1500, but when my brother replaced my head gasket, and put the exhaust back on the flange didnt match up perfectly and he told me to fix it, the car still idled at 1500 |

Do you have a brake booster? Mine caused this due to the rubber peice, the main bit in it having aleak therefore when you start the car all was good then when you put the brake on it dropped then when taking foot off brake it rises, mine was too 1500, I fixed it today! Brakes are awesome, i can now lock up all four wheels without any real effort (may not be a good thing...but oh well) but the lose of vacuum pressure casued something to go psycho and after rpm dropping to go up really high, now it's fixed both problems! |

what happens if you tap the accelerator pedal quickly? I had the same issue before with my weber, the throttle linkage was binding I cleaned and sprayed a silicon spray that helped a tiny bit when I installed new return spring that solved the issue not really sure if thats appicable to your carby |
